Well, of course anything can be put into anything. But I have a 96 cobra with the dohc 4.6 liter motor, It is a tight fit in the mustang. The heads/valve covers are very wide and I don't see any easy way to fit it in a ranger. Look up the engine width and I think you will see what I mean.

Alot of those 5.0 rangers actually have a chevy 305 in them, it's narrower and fits easily in the engine bay. I have seen 351w swaps, but I can't imagine trying to change the spark plugs....

Rather than go with the wide Cobra DOHC 4.6, how about a tall 5.4 Triton crate motor. It is a truck after all for goodness sakes...

well the parts person i spoke wiht at local ford place about motor wasn't very helpful, saying its a waiste ect, and wouldnt help me out on legality issues >would it pass inspection< so im still up in the air on exact motor, but i want that basic 5.0 or 4.6 block, and decided on 8.8 rear because of price heh... yea a 5.4 triton would be nice power for a truck but thats adding more weight, i think that motor is a full 200 more than the one in it now ... were as the 4.6 is 100 more or 80 i cant remember

The 5.4 would be alot tougher cause it and the 4.6 are similar except that the 5.4 is taller. The 4.6 and 5.4 have the same bore the 5.4 getting the extra ci from a longer stroke, making it a taller block. Now assuming that the cylinders in the 4.6 and and the 5.4 have a similar angle, that makes it somewhat wider too. Theres also the electronics nightmare that comes w/ the triton sohc engines. Frankly, I would say you would be alot better off sticking w/ the 5.0 simply cause you'll get the most ci for you outside dimensions, plus they have hop up parts galore.

You'll have a hard time fitting the 4.6/5.4 between the fenders.

altho with the body lift < which i have never done or seen done, oui > ill get more clearance ect

any tips on how to do a body lift heh?

just make sure you have:

A- An extra set of hands
B- An impact wrench
C- Time
D- 2 Jacks, preferably floor jacks so you can move the stuff around to align properly.

If you have those things, it's relativly easy. Also make sure you have the proper torx bit to remove the bed. Put a 3" Trail master body lift on my 91 ranger in about 6 hours. You may altough have to get a little clever w/ bracket modifications to bring the bumpers up. I ended up having to flip my rear brackets upsidedown and then weld the bumper to them to make it look right.

I understand and respect what you are trying to do, but all that cash would go a very long ways on the down payment for an '04 Ranger 4X4 4.0L. That is my plan for getting more power from my Ranger. Trade it in for a new one. Of course, if I had the extra money I'd buy myself the new Ranger and completely Baja my current Ranger. Good luck!
