Im looking a a buget rebuild on an 86 460 in a 4x4 crew cab. Basic rebuild with new bolts,after-market cam, new springs, etc. I was wondering if the stock exhaust manifolds are "very" restrictive. Summit has Hedman Headers for around $130. Seems tooo cheap. I am considering a "back yard" port job on exhaust. I understand this is the weak spot in this engine as far as performanc. Will my fuel injection and computer adjust for these slight modifications? Appriciate any coments. Thanks
Yes the exhaust is a weak point, the hedmans arent bad, altho I like the Flowtechs on my 90 a bit better than the hedmans on my 90 bronc. They seem to be a bit better in the fit and finish and the flanges are definatley heavier!! (Only $10 more at summit for the FT's versus the Hedmans) As for the computer, I cant say for sure (I thought 86 was still carbed tho??) as you will be opening up the exhuast quite a bit.... also, the Hedmans and FTechs are both long tube headers, so you will have a bit more exhuast work inlvoved than if you went with a set of shorty tube headers
The truck that I bought was advertised as an 89, titled as a 90, and was built in 4/90. Apparently I an having trouble conveying the year. My oops. Basically the headers and porting will be mostly top-end. Thanks guys.
