I have a 1988 460 EFI. It is on a Motorhome built on an E350 frame.
The last 3 feet of tail pipe has been missing for about a month and yesterday I got around to replacing it.
The first thing I noticed was that the emissions from the tail pipe were extremely hot. You can't stand to have your hand in front of it for more than a second. Of course the tail pipe would cook a steak in about 3 seconds.
I don't think I have ever felt an exhuast that hot. Any ideas as to why?
Its an explosion which equals fire coming from the combustion chamber. Fire is hot. The longer the pipe the more time it has to cool due to the heat lost from the pipe to the air. The shorter it is, the less time for heat transfer from the pipe.
Yea having a converter in the system will heat the pipe up alot more than a system without. A guy I know has stainless tips on his truck and on the trip home with the new system the tips turned gold, I would assume that was due to the heat?
Check to see if the engine is running too hot. It may not be over heating but the temp is too high. see if it running too lean and the timing is correct.
