59 Mercury

Anyone know what transmissions come in these cars?
I was talking to one of my buddies that scraps/parts out cars and I was asking if he had any ford transmissions, and he said the only one he had was out of a 58 Mercury but I could have the tranny.
Anyone know what this is before I drive the distance and pull it?

If it was a C6 I was going to get it in a heart beat.
I didn't know what it was tho.
Does anyone want the pushbuttom type transmissions?

I don't think the C6 came out till the '60s, it might be an FMX, but whatever it is, I don't think you want it unless you are doing a resto on a '58 Merc and need the original trans. -TD

Ask your buddy if he still has the body. You could grab the Teletouch controller while you're there. It's an Edsel part too.
The tranny is probably the Merc-o-matic 3 speed. Also called Fordomatic(Ford), Turbo-drive(Lincoln), Flightomatic(Studebaker), Flash-o-matic(Rambler), Automatic(Edsel), and Cruise-o-matic.

Now you have to wonder if the rear is the big Lincoln or Ford 9". Sounds like a potential E-bay sale on Mercury parts coming on here!

So, that leaves the engine. Is it an FE or MEL. Is the bellhousing pattern the same for both?

While brousing in the Y block forum, I ran across this:

Post number 13 was the answer.

Looks like FE=MEL bellhousing pattern.
