My neighbor lost his only ignition key to his 91 F-150, and I was wondering if it would be fairly easy to replace the ignition lock with something from a local parts store, or does it have to come from ford? Assuming I don't need a locksmith, what exactly do I need to do to replace it? According to some other posts here, alot of ford keys are interchangable, but my 92 key won't work for him. Doh! By the way his ignition, and door keys are different.
I'd go down to Ford directly, and see if they can give you another key based off the VIN#, that would be a lot easier than replacing the whole ignition.
Look in the glove box. There should be a number on the panel in it that you can take to your Ford dealer and they can get a key cut for you from that number, which has the key pattern on computer and they can order it. We had to do it with a '90 F-250 we used to have.
Just get a new replacement tumbler and keys from Pep boys, Advance Auto or one of the parts houses for under $25.00. Look for a small hole in the underside of teh column directly under the switch, push an icepick or something similar in the hole and push up, and pull the tumbler out. Replace with new tumbler and he's good to go. 5 minutes or less.

Thanks for the all the info everyone. It looks like he'll have to call a locksmith, unless he can get a key from our local Ford dealer. At least he won't have to have the door locks replaced, because it uses a seperate key, which he still has! I guess I won't be able to take his truck apart to see how mine works this weekend. Happy 4th.
A Locksmith can cut from the code also, probably cheaper than Ford and a lot quicker.
A service call costs about $40 here and if you find the code and take it to a Locksmith shop it is real cheap. All the dealerships do is send the order out to a Locksmith anyway, you can cut out the middleman.
I will tell him to look for the code in his glove box, and take that, and or the VIN, down to the local Ford dealer, and try to get the key code. Then I'll send him to a locksmith.
