Thanks for the advice I think I'll stick with the 300 and do some porting and put a different cam in it-I may even shave the head to boost compression-with these mods I should get close to 300 hp right? Right now it has 35's with 3.55 gears so I'll probably change those to 4.10's or something. These mods should suit me all right as I won't be doing any mud bogging and there isn't a whole lot of sand here in MT.
You probably won't get 300 hp out of the 6 and still have it useable offroad. I'd figure that with cam/4bbl carb/2-1 exhaust/boosted compression you'd run about 200 HP BUT you'd also be putting out about 325-350 lbs of torque.
A bigger V8 might have the horsepower that can come in handy offroad but a 351 doesn't have quite the low end torque that the 300 has. Sure a 351 is gonna be better for offroad racing, but when it comes down to being in the mud or on the rocks, a 300 is adequate competition. Put some serious upgrades on a 300 and it has NO competition offroad.

I agree about 4wheeler. They only show custom axled, tube chassis, monster v8 rock crawlers. That's good, but I thought it was supposed to be for all 4wheelers, not just rock crawlers. I only read the 4wheel parts mag now, and that is only because it is free. It is a lot better than 4wheeler, though. I have almost exclusively switched to this site It has exactly what I want in a magazine and no BS. Anytime I want glossy photos, I click on view users galleries, and see what REAL people drive. I could go on, but anyway, here goes my $.02 about the 300. I remember them from when I was younger being a little underpowered. So, when I bought my truck with a 300, it was on the list of things to change. Well, it came with all the goodies that people put on a 300, so after driving it once, I was convinced to keep it I used to have 3.73s with 33" SSRs, and I really liked that combo. It would cruise down the road but still had decent power off road. I ended up switching to 4.10s, and now I wish I had bigger tires. In fact, I will probably switch to 35s or 36s when these wear out. If you do the headers, cam, intake, 4bbl mods, you will open up a offroad beast. Mine will chug along great, and go just about anywhere my friends bronco with a 351 will, but it is a little different style of 4wheeling. It spins up a little slower, but pulls hard. I think you will be happy, and it will be less than swapping in a 351. Ted

As far as I'm concerned no stock (ford, chevy, dodge or whatever) V-8 would still be runnin under my foot and my disability to shift at a low rpm with 245K on it all orig. I've held this truck muddin many a time the whole dirt (6in. deep mud) mile road in 2nd at 4500rpms just messin round everytime it rains pretty much, then hook 12,500lbs of trailer behind to go to a tractor pull. In winter we ram are trucks through 3ft. snow drifts and the only thing that holds me back from the diesels and 351W and 350's is those are 3/4 ton trucks and are a little bit higher, otherwise I'll go anywhere they can go draggin my axle in mud and snow, it's when I start pushin w/ the bumper is what slows me down. Hell I've broke, sheared, snapped every mount holdin that drivetrain in behind that engine, got my right side motor mount rachet strapped in cuz it broke agian pullin my trailer along w/ my tranny mount. I make it my point in life to blow this engine up so I can get a 351W V-8, but as long as i keep oil in it it's fricken impossiable, unless I sat in my driveway and held it to the floor for 15 minutes, but that's a waste and doesn't make that great of a story for the guys. This is one long lastin engine that you can beat the livin crap outta stock or modified and bring it home and drive to work, pull a trailer (not to fast, but it'll pull anything ya can hook behind it) includin them blew up V-8's. The question here is who here has beat the crap outta there stock V-8 for the last 18 yrs. almost everyday and has over 245K nothin internal replaced? Anyway trust me on this that 300 er go where you want to if got good tires and some clearence.
oh yeah, my 6 has gotten me everywhere the 8's go and further with only a MSD coil and Taylor wires. I'm also wondering what is with all the small tires? I mean I'm just a girl and I have a 6"suspension, 3"body lift, runnin 38 TSL and plan on buying bigger come fall. And to top it all off, I'm stil running stock gearing.

I have "small" tires because I decided to make mine about what a stock highboy would be. I know, I know, I could have just bought a highboy instead of converting mine, but where is the fun in that I don't like the 4.10s with 33s, though, so you will be happy to know I will switch to 36s when these wear out. I really liked my truck with 3.73s and 33s, so I figure that 36s will kindof even that out
Never said girls were agianst muddin/offroadin, me and a couple of women were out the other night screwing round (3:30 in the morning), then last night agian with another girl and my friend, they seem to love it, although I get yelled at a lot for almost killin us all, but it's worth it. It was raining while we were muddin last night and we all know how slick it is when that happens, sideways about the whole time smackin every branch stickin out into the road. Always fun, but I need some new tires, there pretty wore out. I'd like bigger ones, about 35's (currently running 31's) but then I'd have to buy a lift kit and all new gears, plus the tires, which is a big chunk of money I ain't got right now.
Teds74 - I'm glad I've found FTE. Last week my thought was to replace my I-6 as well but am now challenged to get the desired power from what I have. Sure alot easier than an engine swap!
I had three 4x4 trucks with the 300-6, an 83 F-250, an 84 F-150 and a 92 F-150 Supercab. All three engines had more than enough power to go play in the mud. Truthfully you don't need alot of power in the mud anyway and I pulled out an aweful lot of V8 engine trucks that the drivers told me they would be better n the mud. In mud what matters is traction and if you go tit then you can go, if you don't then you won't go well. As far as the 302, the 300-6 is a much better engine, there is minimal difference in HP and the 300 has more torque in the useable range. The 302 will be faster in a race but hook up the same loaded trailer behind it and the 300 will keep right along side the 302 anyday with less foot in the throttle.
