Hello Gents,
Does anybody know what the fuel pressure should be on a 1990 Bronco with a 302 EFI? I am having a problem when stepping on the gas. Truck seems to be "holding back". I believe it is either a fuel problem or a clogged cat. A friend has the fuel pressure gauge. I believe I can check the cat with a vacuum gauge, by increasing RPM's, vacuum should increase, or so I believe. If rpm's increase and vacuum doesn't, could mean clogged cat. I read this somewhere a long time ago. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas?
An easy fix is to replace the fuel filter and see if that brings the PSI back up. Could also be the fuel pressure regulator, or a fuel pump check valve going bad.
It idles pretty good. However, when i turn the A/c on at idle it stalls. I did a complete tune -up. air filter, fuel filter, plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, threw in some fuel injector cleaner. I replaced the ignition control module on distributor, which lessened the hesitation, still does it, but not nearly as bad. It only does this during acceleration. Maybe the pick-up coil in distributor? Or ignition coil? Could a lazy or sticking air bypass valve cause this? Thanks for suggestions. Anymore will be welcome. I LOVE THIS SITE!!!
Increases? Hmm. Typically, if your problem was related to fuel delievery, the pressure would be dropping momentarily. As you mentioned, I'd look into the air bypass valve. I'd also be curious to see what your timing does when you hit the throttle.
It sounds like the same trouble I am having... I haven't checked my fuel pressure yet but from what you describe it sounds like a faulty fuel pressure regulator or a vacuum leak. I checked my vacuum pressure and it is at a steady 14 in.hg at idle and almost 15 at 2000 rpm. Now I have to look for leaks... I'm hoping its a vacuum leak and not valves... I poured Sea Foam down the air intake and it did help some. Give it a try, good stuff.
Thanks redrumybronco. I drove bronco over 100 miles today. Hesitation still there but not as bad. I replaced coil this evening. Will run it in the morning out to western New Jersey. As for checking fuel pressure regulator, I had a gauge on mine and disconnected the vacuum hose, pressure jumped up as it should. Keep that in mind when you check yours. I dont think that is my problem.
35 psi at idle, about 45 when u hit the throttle is normal. Your fuel reg controls the press. Unplug it, and it should be at 45psi. Funny, cause i just checked mine today.
