302: two different bellhousings?

I was talking to a guy today that had recently swapped a 302 in to one of his older cars. He was saying he had a little trouble because there was there were 302's with two different bellhousings. Now that I've thought about that all day, I vaguely remember hearing that somewhere. What was the deal? Were the very early ones different, then they changed to the standard "small block Ford" pattern?

289

289's had two different bellhousings. The pre '65 had a 5 bolt belhousing, and the '65 and up had the familiar 6 bolt bellhousing that continued when the 289 was enlarged to 302.

The 6 bolt small block bellhousings are the same as far as the bolt pattern, but the actual internal size of the bellhousing may be different depending on if it came frome a 28 OZ balance or a 50 OZ balance flywheel (in the case of a C-4 anyway - not sure about a C-6 or FMX). Most 50 oz flywheels have more teeth than a 28 OZ. More teeth makes the flywheel OD larger. There are aftermarket companies that make the smaller flywheels in the 50 OZ balance though.
