before we moved we got broken into, almost exactly like yours. found out it was one of the guys who BUILT OUR HOUSE! that was the worst part! we got most everything back (all they took was jewelry, none of my or my dad's tools or anything like that)but it was a pretty crappy deal, it was like being scared in your own house for the first few nights before we knew who did it. The other scary part was knowing that they knew your schedule, like, when you were gona and stuff.that creeped me out the most (plus i was like, 8). anyways, just let the Sherriffs (or if you live in town the city cops) handle it, if theyre semi-competent like ours theyll catch them. Hope you get your tools back....hard enought o fix stuff as it is!

In actuality, you probably would have spent more money in preventing this from happening than what the stolen tools were worth, and even then, there are no guarantees that it still couldn't happen. And that suspecious neighbor is probably just as innocent as "Chuck & Barb" next door.
Sorry about your loss, but at least they didn't get your
I had a similar experience several years ago. We lived in a small house with a carport. We had a '68 Mustang and a '64 Econoline van. I had a little metal storage building in the back (fenced) yard. I kept my yard tools and such in the metal building, but my mechanics tools (a non-craftsman socket set and a few screwdrivers) in a tool box in my van.
Because the carport was only for one car, I parked the van in the front yard beside the driveway, near the bedroom window.
One Sunday, upon coming home from church, I saw that one of my van doors was not completely closed. Upon closer checking, the passenger window was shattered, and my tools were gone. I know the sick feeling. I called the sheriff and basically he wrote it up, with a "no prints available" statement, although the culprit had gone into my back yard, stolen my propane torch and an aluminum funnel to try to burn the rubber from around the window. I guess the heat shattered it. (Poor dummy, he could have used a coat hanger!). Anyway the funnel was oil coated, so I know there had to be prints everywhere.
Bottom line: My comprehensive fixed the van window. My homeowners policy replaced my tools, and I actually came out to the good. That is except for the bad feeling I had for a few weeks.

I now live on the same block as a law officer.
I am pretty sure who did the deed, but never got proof.
But the serial number was put on the national alert net for stolen firearms. The crack-head punk that took it may not get busted, but eventually it will turn up, and hopefully anyone connected with it will be going bye-bye.
More than that I can't express, because this is a family website- and even after all this time I can't think about the incident in polite terms.
