refurbishing 62 econoline van
My name is Alva Young, and I live in Kiefer, Ok just south of Tulsa. I am refurbishing an old Econoline van. Not restoring.
This is going to be a working unit, and is being customized for handy man type of work. However, it will not be very apparent that this is a handy mans van full of tools and such to attract thievs.
It will be a cool looking ride. all the door handles have been removed along with the noisy inner door parts. The generator has been traded out for an alternator, and the engine has been completly overhauled along with the tranny, brakes, and undercarriage.
My biggest problem at the momet is locating new window rubber. I have a new tinted windshield and have removed the other windows for tinting. The van is stripped down for blasting and painting. I have done away with the metal engine box in favor of a new wooden unit equipped with cup holders.
I will also install custom cabinets and removable leather seats from an Oldsmobile minivan. This is going to be a cool ride that is fully functional as a work wagon, but I need a little help. Along with the new window rubber seals I also need a new steering wheel complete with a horn cap.
I have plenty of parts left over such as the door handles and generator and engine box. They are not in perfect shape, but are not bad either. I have been taking pictures of the van all through the construction including the one inch of rat turds that completely covered the floor when I towed the ugly monster home.
I intend to paint the van with a dark grey base coat and then clear coat it with pearl and ghost images of different diamond shapes using different amounts of pearl in the clear coat. I have done a few paint jobs on motorcycles but this will be the first time I ever painted a van. The materials for this paint job are going to be expensive so I hope I get it right. Any pointers I should know about use of the pearl additive in the clear coat will be much appreciated.
I will appreciate any help the members of this forum can provide. I can be contacted at my email address which is alvayoung1@netzero.net.
