Unhappy Help! PSD no-start, not CAMP!

Hi, new member here, but not a new visitor to this great site. My early '99 PSD (50K Mi. on it) was running great with not even a hint of a problem, parked it and a couple of days later it wouldn't start. Read a bunch of threads on this site, including several on the Cam Position Sensor, which sounds exactly like my problem, so I replaced it woth a new one -- and still no start!

What I've checked:
No error codes stored (checked this 1st with my SCMT).
All the fuses, under the dash and under the hood are good.
Batteries good (original but fully charged).
Was running the SCMT Tow program, and set it back to stock with no change.
It turns over fine but doesn't even want to catch.
3/4 tank of fuel, fuel filter changed less than 20k ago.
I did notice the tach didn't move b4 the new CAMP sensor was installed, nor does it move now.
If I keep cranking for say 30 seconds, the fuel gauge starts to jump around, mean anything to you folks?

Any other ideas or what to check next?

thanks in advance -- I love this truck, especially when it runs!

Sounds kinda dumb but check to see if you fuelled it with diesel and not gas. Put the wrong fuel in and you get the same symptoms. I have seen a few fire/ambulances fuel up with gas and they will start drive all over town and then not start, they will turn over and act like it is starving for fuel. Just a thought.

Check both the fuel pressure and the high pressure oil pump. If the HPOP is not producing enough pressure the injectors won't work.

Thanks for the help -- I will check fuel and oil pressure. The tank was filled with diesel and is now down to 3/4 full, so unless someone snuck up my driveway and past my dogs (not likely), I'm thinking it's still diesel in the tank...

one more thought open the fuel filter and be sure there is fuel in it. A bad fuel pump or blocked fuel line can do that to you

I did try draining some fuel out, to be sure it didn't have water, but I'll check for fuel flow with the filter out.

Now this seems unlikely to be related: but I remember the last time I drove it and when I parked I was moving the shift lever (automatic) towards park and the end cap for the OD button came off (I think it's happened before and the little tabs that hold it on are broken). Anyway, I ended up shutting the engine down with it in reverse (I think), or at least not Park. I fiddeled with the OD cap for a bit and then put the shifter in Park. I know, it seems stupid, but it's the only other thing I can recall that was different about running the truck....

continued thanks for your input...

Did the tach work b4 the truck went down? If so, one would think that you either installed a defective but new CAMPS or that you put in the early model instead of the late model which is what starts your rig. According to IH you cannot use one with the orther type rig ... they say it won't work. So, I would at least check that. The early model (b4 mid-96 I believe) is IH #: 1821720C98 and the late model is IH #: 1825899C93.

Interesting... Yes the tach worked fine before. I bought ford part # F7TZ-12K073-A which was supposed to be for 99+ 7.3 PSDs. So I'm staring right at the tach while cranking and it doesn't even bobble one bit, but what you're telling me is it should... Sounds like the new one is bad too -- is there any way to check the sensor itself (like with a multi-meter) for resistance or something? One thing I did when installing the new one: the instructions I got that were posted on this site say to pull fuse #9 under the hood. Well my manual tells me #9 is for my left headlight, but #19 is for the PCM (I think that's what it's called), so I figured the 1 was dropped in the instructions and I pulled #19 instead of #9. Not sure if it matters...

I do have a friend with a '99 PSD and he is willing to come by and swap CAMPs, but that won't be til later in the week -- so if there was a way to test it before, that'd be sweet...

Thanks some more...

So the wife was down at the feed store and is talking to one of the guys and explains why she's not in the truck -- he says that a friend of his Dad's had the same problem and it turned out to be a low battery (one of the 2). So she gets home with the big news, which I tell her that's the 1st thing I already checked, plus I stuck them on the charger all night already, blah, blah. Then I get to thinking, I didn't take the cables off the batteries, I just checked/charged them in the truck (stupid me). So I go back and pull the cable off one battery and low-and-behold: where I got a 12.46V reading together, one reads 12.75V by itself and the other 9.2V!! So I charge up the batteries somemore and throw a jumper cable on the bad one, and guess what? yup, it started right up (and me now with my male ego held in my hands behind my back)...

So now I do have that spare cam position sensor after all...! Next stop: Costco for some new batteries.

Thanks everyone for the help...!

When my 97 E350 PSD van got to 5 years on batteries (2002) I changed them. When your rig tried to start with one low battery, did it spin the motor over correctly and it just not fire or what? Usually, on a gasoline motor, you'd get the idea it was batteries just by the way it spins over so slowly.

Red face

That's the part that really threw me for a loop -- the thing turned over just fine, didn't seem slow at all, and I could keep cranking it and cranking it with out a change in the crank speed (audible). A mechanic I heard from said the PSD must crank over at 300 RPM minimum, so I'm guessing it's a computer thing and it doesn't get fuel unless it hits that minimum (this is me guessing remember). Mine was probably turning over at 299 RPM....!
