I hooked up everything for the HEI conversion and the truck started and would run OK at 2000 rpm. It would never idle at low idle and any idle speed between 1000 and 2000 it would surge. Module test OK and does not get hot with the heatsink I used. The coil is good and I even used an MSD "Blaster 2" with the same results. Checked the wiring several times and according to "gofastforless.com" it is correct.
One company make a "conversion kit" called D.U.I. or Davis Unified Ignition. It is a replacement Distributors for ford engines and they make one for the 300 l6. It has the module in the distributor and the coil in the cap like a GM HEI. In fact it used common GM cap, rotor, coil and module.
Some day when I get out of the poor house, I will install a DUI. Until then I guess i will use the home brew version.
Yea, I'm thinking about doing that D.U.I. setup on my 302 that I'm building (if money permits) since it was fuel injected and I'll need a new dist. anyways
If everything was running OK before, especially if you had the DSII dizzy, then I'd wonder about firing order, timing, and if it's a different used dizzy, then maybe the vacuum advance is bad, or even a stuck mechanical advance.
