Does Your State Have A Budget?

For the past 20 years, the New York State Assembly and Senate have found it impossible to come up with our annual budget on time. They go way over the deadline, which causes all sorts of headaches, like making it impossible for school districts to adopt their budgets. This year, they didn't adopt ANY budget before leaving for their summer vacation, which means a court will have to step in and take action. And, believe it or not, all our legislators STILL GET PAID while pulling a stunt like this.

I'm just curious: does your state have the same problem? Could we do an informal poll, and have someone from each state post a quick reply with what goes on in your state? I don't want to get this political (let's play by the rules), just trying to get a feel what goes on in the rest of the country.

I know Minnesota has doen the same thing. And even if there is an approved budget, they never seem to stay within it anyway.

Cities in WA have budgets; they include the "general fund". Imagine if each of us had a fund that HAD to be blown before the end of the year.

Jeff I hear you...those clowns shouldn't be allowed to go home until they approve a budget. If my credit rating looked like NY state's I wouldn't be able to borrow a dime. This state is slowly killing itself, especially our area upstate, I laugh everytime they talk about bringing more businesses to the Rochester area, the ones we have can't bail fast enough. But hey, we have a fast ferry, whoo hoo (I'm being sarcastic if you couldn't tell).

California has annual cluster blank about budgets. With Ahhnold, the legislature dudes are steppin' and fetchin' like their pants is on fire and their whatsit is catchin'.

Even though the current situation creates a vacuum, it is such an improvement over our previous gov. that it gives me hope I will be able to live here until planted.

I didn't know a lot of municipalities in TX had budgets anymore. Houston cuts property taxes a smidgen, but I hear nothing of cutting spending (fiscal conservatism....where did you go???) ANYWHERE, period.

Well, I do hear "Well, if we cut spending, vital services will go...". Yeah right. IF governments on all levels were actually running a tight ship in the first place, none of this would be happening. Run on projected surpluses and the "fit hits the shan" and you've got a whole nation load of states with smashed "budgets"....

I didn't realize being a public SERVANT should pay so well--then throw in pork and under the table deals to boot. I'd be a LOT happier about the bunch of losers on Cap Hill (Hey, I'm serious here!) if they'd turn down a raise...like every time or just let us vote it down for them.

This is an interesting subject which could give rise to a serious discussion on how governments on various levels are funded, and why many are facing serious problems. Subjects such as this are no longer allowed so I fear we must stick to such stimulating topics as what toothpaste we use or what size boots you wear.

This thread will get locked only if we turn it into a political discussion, which it really isn't. We aren't talking political views, candidates, or Democrat vs. Republican. It's a discussion about government and how it operates in the different states.

I lived in NH for a while and they always pass a balanced budget as far as I know (recently moved). I think last year they were one of the two (?) states that did.

Plus, if the pols start talking raising taxes and salaries in the same breath, they are replaced by someone that will do it for less money. They have fees and such and some consider the property tax high, since they have no income tax, though the property tax is lower then the city tax you pay in other states for your property.

Did I mention it is a great place to live?

"government and how it operates", "political discussion, which it really isn't".
POLITICAL - (1) science or CONDUCT of government, (2) political affairs, METHODS or principals. Don't get me wrong, I would love to lay in on this subject, but doing so without politics ... alot like swimming without water.

I'm sorry, Dono, I thought it was a non-political question: does your state come up with a budget in a timely manner, or not? I'm doing some research so I'll be prepared when I contact my state legislators about this. I would have put it in a "poll" form, but that didn't seem to work. If it becomes political, it's not my doing.

Ever wonder what a true "vital service" is, just see which employees have to show up for work on a snow day and which ones stay home. In Kansas it gets announced on the TV& radio that only "essential" employees show up for work when it snows more then 4 inches. I wonder why they have all those "nonessential" employees working there.
