1998 Explorer Transfer Case Rebuild?

My 1998 AWD 5.0 Explorer XLT's transfer case is going. i hear a creaking noise that i have been told by 2 mechanics that it is somthing called a Viscus Gear or somthing to that nature. Now the other day i am starting to feel a clunk when the trans downshifts to stop. it seems the condition of the case is gettin worse. what do you think is a better idea. im limited on funds. Rebuild my Transfer case, buy a rebuild and toss mine, or buy a new one (EXTREME LAST RESORT!). Thanks.

And by the way i got my MAC intake in and it sounds amazing and improved horsepower pretty well.
