I have a 77 f250 crew cab. The previos owner put a 428(FE) in it and now I can't get it smooged in california. I found a 460 to put in it(i know i will need to change motor mounts), but I don't know where to find a bellhousing, if one was ever made to go between a 460 & the 4-speed I have. I think that it's a sm465. It's married and has the granny low first. Any info would be grweatly appriciated. Thanks
bell housing are no problem. Get a 400/351m, a lot of trucks came with those, and a 4 speed. DONT ask the salvage yard for a 460 bellhousing!! Either they will 1 say they dont have it(cause they dont know), or 2 they will have a actual 460 bellhousing, and charge out the butt for it, or 3 they will have a 400 bellhousing, but since you asked for a 460, they will say they got it, and they will charge out the butt for it.
I have em, dont think it would be cost effective to ship that far, i would sell but would rather hold on to it.
You can find one at the yards, i am sure. Like i said the 400/351m with 4 speed was very common on al the 79 models, the bellhousing are the same same same.
When i got mine, we were out of em, as we are the ford place around here. So i went to anouther yard and asked for a 400. Guys says yea i got one, its down there in that pile, i go look and find one with a little crack in it, go back ask how much for the one with the crack, He tells me, i pay, i go get it, bring it back, he sees it, says hey wait a minute, thats a 460 bellhousing!, i says yea, well its the same part number as this broken 400 one i have here in the truck, he says really?, i says yup, hes says ok, but i was sure that came from one of those rare 460 trucks i had?, you sure you got a 400?, i says yea im sure, i have the heads for it here too, wanna see? yup those are not 460 heads, and the numbers match, and i priced it all ready, so go on, but i ussually get 100 on 460 bellhousing, well i only run 400's or 351's(lie, sorry), so i'll only ever need those, see ya later.
Thanks for the info. It wiil be useful when dealing with the wrecking yard.
Torque1st,
I thought that would be the case too, so I told everyone it was a 360. 300, 302, 330, 361, 391, 351, 400, 460, 477, & 534 were the options for light & heavy duty pickups in 1977. Basically everything but what I have.
I thought in California you had to have the original motor though. As in if it came with a 351m it had to stick with a 351m. 460 F250 has to have a 460. I don't think you can license a F150 with a 460 in California. I may be going out there so...no cut up exhaust for me....
1977 F150 did not come with 360/390 etc. 1976 was the last year of the FE engines. 1977 was the last year the 460 was available in Calif in F150. We had one where I was working in 1977/8 and it was a going rig.
