I have a 2002 ranger edge 2wheel drive, 3.0 liter engine. @ about 14k miles the serpentine belt started squealing like a pig. Took it to the dealership and they put a new one on. Less than 3k miles later it started again and i just put up with it. This past friday i was driving home and it desintegrated. Wrapped itself all up in the fan. This was with 35925 miles on it. Took it to the dealership and they found that the idler pulley was bad so they put a new one on and a new serpintine belt. Got it back Last night. Drove it home and it was fine. Drove to work this morning, took a 30 mile trip and halfway it started squealing worse than it ever has. Sounds like i have a thousand crickets breeding under the hood. Well my luck has it that it is now out of warranty . I am calling the dealership tomorrow and telling them they better fix it since it was bad in the first place before the warranty was up (we'll see if they'll fix it or not) .
I guess the main question is...is this a common problem with the 3 liter engine?
thanks guys for any information you may have.
The dealership needs to inspect the grooves in each pulley and clean if/as needed. They should inspect the belt for proper alignment as well as the tensioner for proper tension. Finally, they should make sure that no component is failing and causing the belt to slip over the pulley. Since you had it in the shop with 35925 miles and assuming you haven't exceed the mileage that they would warranty the repair for if it were paid for by you, I'd expect them to fix it N/C.
My local Ford dealer calls it a "Pre-existing" condition & has made good for me, on several occasions, out of warranty mileage/time problems.
All I needed was the paperwork/work-order to show it was a pre-existing condition & when it was last addressed.
I agree with CowboyBilly9Mile, the dealer needs to take a closer look at things, especially the grooves in all the pulleys & the attached accessories.
Sounds like there may be other issues that need attention, like maybe bad bearings on or a siezed up item on the belt driven line.
I had the same problem on my 03 ranger with a 3.0 engine. I thought I might have got some antifreeze on the belt since I was changing my coolant. I took the belt off and scrubbed it and the pulley grooves with no avail. I bought a new idler and some Pyrol belt dressing from Kragens. I squirted some belt dressing on the pulleys at the auto parts store and it hasn't squeeked since. I haven't returned the idler yet just in case...
well...if it works the same as mine did...it will go bad again b4 too long...in case it does the first thing i would replace is the tensioner pulley...im in the process of trying to sell my 3.0L and getting real one. (4.0L 4X4)
Mighta been helped by now but on my old rig my Tensioner was shot and i had a Crack in my Serpentine Belt, once i replaced both she was quite as a mouse, and it fixed my AC unit, she blew harder colder air after that
