Since no one can help me with my little tranny issue, how about the gears ? I have a 82' Bronco with a 3" body lift and a 6" suspension lift. I have been running stock gears with 35' tires. I have no problems pushing those tires with the stock gears. I mainly use it for highway use on the weekend, no more offroading for her. I am about to buy 38.5' tires, how bad would it be for the stock gears to run them?
BAD..suggest you go with something at 4.56 or higher..ive heard 3.55s can be bad with 35s..anything higher and its just asking for trouble..your gonna kill ur tranny, just get new gears now if u plan on bigger later
I assume you have the Ford 9" rear axle with 3.50 gears? YOu can run those 38's on them, but your gas mileage will be alot worse. I'd be more concerned about the front u-joints or axleshafts breaking before the gears or tranny. That's the weaker link and the first to go [u-joints]. I'll look for your tranny post, too, haven't been on in awhile!
get a 4.56 thirdmember to drop in and remove your front driveline since you wont be going offroad anymore. then when money permits or you want to start offroading again you can get the front gears swapped as well. but like the others have said the front end is weak and 38s are gonna stress it big time.
Thanks for the advise guys. I did some calling around and found out that the rear end is a 9". However the guy at ford said that the gear ratio is 3.00
He said that they probably used a rear end from 81' since the truck was manufactured in Nov of 81'.
So you guys think that the front u joints and axels will be to stressed. I don't use 4 wheel drive anymore. Once in a while in the winter. Some how though, I have had no problems with these gears and the 35" that I'm running.
You had several replies with info on your tranny problem. You never replied back to the people that were trying to help. Unless you try the ideas and at least work with people on trying to find the problem nobody can help...
The gears you "need" all depend on the use you are putting your vehicle to.
Sorry about that, I'm in the army and was in the field all week. I just got back and tried to look up the tranny problem, but it's no longer on this forum. The administrator sent something that said he had moved it somewhere else. I'm not the best at navigating this site. Sorry again. Still looking for advise though.
I have a stock 79 F-100 with a 300 six and a c-6 tranny. My MPG is really bad. I added the tranny. The orginal was a 3 speed on the column. The c-6 works real good, but I am wondering if I should have changed the stock rear end along with the tranny. If so what ratio should I go for?
