Just wondering how many people have a check engine light on their vehicle that is on right now. Or if there is no check engine light (like my 85 F150) do you have any codes stored that need to be cleared (by fixing something)? If so, what needs to be fixed?
I have had my check engine light come on more than once (97 f150 4.6 over 100K). So instead of not knowing and heading for the local Auto Zone (they read for free and clear codes) I bought an OBDll reader to take care of them my self. I would really hate for one time to be the one where I shouldn't of drove to the Zone, Engines are expensive! I don't know about you but there some something really distracting about an idiot light being on while I am driving, especially if I am wondring if my motor is goning to do horrible things to my wallet! I want to know whats wrong and I want to know right then.
I checked "plug fouled error" too many times and never had a plug fouled. After talking to some mechanics at my local Ford dealer, I was told it is not an uncommon thing (not just trucks). Fords in the my year (+-) I was told have a real problem with the Ck. eng. light, Especially on cold starts,it seems to trip that light a lot. Winter here (in SC) is probably equal to spring and fall anywhere else north of the border. So the OBDll reader comes in handy. I can check and clear my own codes, Only after checking for the problem the reader identifies. I did have an O2 sensor go out once, so I changed both of them.
My check engine light has been on for so long it's pathetic. I took it to Ford twice while under warranty and they told me it was running rich on one bank, causeing the O2 sensors to foul. They replaced them twice and within a week, the danged light was back on, each time. I went in and they said that Ford was supposed to be working on a fix for it. Well...warranty expired and nary a thing accomplished.
So...how much does this code reader cost and the O2 sensors? I don't even know where they are, but am willing to change them myself and flip that light off. The truck runs fine and has for over 25000 miles with that #*&@## light glaring in my face. I certainly ain't going to pay Ford to fix something they should have fixed when it was under warranty.
Mine is on now and then, but there is nuttin wrong, the code doesnt go with my vehicle. Must be a fluke in the system. when id does come on for a while, I just put a piece of black tape over it. One less thing to look at.
My 95's has only come on once in the 45,000 miles I've had it (153K total). It was an EGR code and I ended up fixing it by cleaning the EGR valve. I too find it annoying to have dash lights on that shouldn't be, even if I knew it was for something that didn't really matter.
My 86 has a couple codes stored. One for the AIR system, but I removed the air pump anyway. The other is an O2 sensor/feedback solenoid code. I'd like to get rid of that one but don't have the time/money/ambition to spend on it when the truck runs great anyway, and it doesn't have a CEL to bug me.
I have one code stored, no light tho.. (yes it does work) It's because there is a vacuum solenoid to either the AIR bypass, or diverter, not sure which.. The van runs like a raped ape so I'm not too concerned....
One of my biggest pet peeves. I don’t know why, it just annoys me when people drive around with their check engine light on. I usually offer to fix the vehicle for them if it’s not to hard. (Mostly because I love working on cars) Or at least find out what’s wrong. :\
Mines been on for a while, which hurts because I am one of those "don't guess" types when it comes to code pulling....
Heck, just got off a 6-week stint on the boat I work on tonight (very little time in the drivers seat or on land, period)....time to throw some tires on the Ranger and scan a CE light. Probably needs an O2 (symptoms point to that) at a tad under 238K, but we'll find out later this morning.
nope mines not on. mine has only come on a couple times since i owned the pickup...and those were for no apparent reason...the light went off again when i shut it off/started it back up.

One of MY pet peeves is a Motor company who won't even try to find whats wrong, letting the vehicles warranty expire. " Oh, Ford's gonna do a TSB on it soon." Blah...lies.
You are welcome to come up to Montana and look my truck over. I'm not a wealthy man and have bills coming outta a pretty private spot. It urkes me to have to pay outrageous Service charges to only find that nothing has been done, except to delay the light coming on again in less than a week. I have always maintained my own vehicles, before I got this new thing, which I DO happen to love to drive. But as for working on it...everything is ten times more complicated than the older V8s.
Is my engine light on......not yet.......but then, I think its unplugged, it never comes on.........someday when I can afford it....I'll pull the codes.
