I'm about to roll 18,000 miles on my '03 Ranger 4.0L. This week I've noticed that on a cold start, my truck make an odd noise immediately after firing. Once it starts, for a second or maybe two seconds it sounds like something is rattling awfully hard. I don't know if the starter motor is not disengaging fast enough, or if it's the timing chains or what. I'd like to get an idea of what the problem is before I take it in to the dealer for warranty work. Any ideas?
The infamous timing chain rattle happens between 2500 - 3500 RPMs on a cold engine, once the engine warms up, it usually goes away. They know what the fix is, so just tell them to do the TSB. If that doesn't fix it, make sure they do the back chain also.
I Thought that the newer 4.0 L engine S.O.H.C. had the problem corrected, and the chain rattling was only found with the older 4.0 L V.O.H.C. Engines ?
What type of oil are you using ? I will probably get flamed for this but, When I used dino oil in my 2003 4.0 L S.O.H.C. it sounded Like CRAP!!!!!!
Switched to Motorcraft 5w-30 Full Synthetic--WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!!
Anyway it is unfortunate that you should be having trouble with such a new engine.....let us know what you find out.
I'm taking it in for a check while it's under warranty. I hate to cost the dealership money for something that may or may not be a problem, but it's odd to have these noises with only 18,000 miles on the odometer. I'll let you know what their diagnosis is.
