I just bought a 60 ford f-100 4x4 ..vin plate says it came out with 292.A friend says it has a 390 in it . On the block on right hand side it say's 352. How do i figure out what engine of the 3 is in this truck????????? Thank's for any advise anyone can give me.
It is a FE. If the stroke is 3.5" it is a360, if it is 3.78" it is a 390,If it is 3.98" then it is a 428. Other displacements are possable. but you would have to measure the bore to know for sure.i.e. 352, 406, 410 etc...
thats true, except if he pulled a piston out, but who is going to go through all that unless he's going to rebuild it. my origanal pistons had 390 in them.
Thanks everyone for the advice . I am going to rebuild the truck ground up , off frame so will probably have many ??????????? Thanks Again!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even that can be misleading. Truck 390's use merc 410 pistons to lower compression. When I got a 390 short block from the junkyard and pulled it apart I was all excited b/c the pistons were stamped 410. I was pretty bummed when I figured out it was only a 390 as advertised by the guy I got it from.
Welcome to FE world.
Pinhead! Welcome to FTE! Stick around for more information than you will ever need. You have a FE engine. Look closely at the intake manifold; see how a portion of it is covered by the top of the rocker arm cover? Before you start off on that ground up restoration, drive the truck! In fact run the heck out of it and then decide what you want to spend your money on. To be fairly sure what size engine you have without tearing off the heads you must measure the stroke. To measure the stroke pull number 1 and 6 sparkplugs. Push a wire (coat hanger works) in number one until it stops and make a mark on the wire at the valve cover, now do the same on number six. Measure the distance between the two marks and post back!
