Question many questions 97 ext cab

I am looking at making some changes to my 97 ext cab f150.

I have the standard dash panel that doesn't include a tach, and want to add one. If I bought the standard ford dash that includes a tach in the panel, would it work, or is my best bet a separate add on tach.

I have the basic bench and want to change to a split bench (or posssibly buckets). What years are straight swaps? Does it matter if a seat is made for a regular cab or extended cab?

Also, in a bit of a stretch, I would like to have the option to remove the flip down part of the seats in the rear. I am putting a subwoofer in and the seat will no longer be able to flip forward because the underside of the seat will be full of speaker/box. I was wondering if there is some type of hinge made that would allow me to remove the top portion of the seat if I needed the room?

Any help is much appreciated and thanks if you actually read this whole message.

just my two cents. If you must have a tach, go with aftermarket. I am 99% sure you can directly bolt in a 97 split bench into a 97 basic, and 99% sure you can also bolt in a 97 bucket/console into a 97 basic. I think the holes are already drilled. Just pull the seat/rubber floor mat and look to see if there are any factory drilled holes for other seating configerations. In my 97 xlt supercab, the rear seat flips down to make a solid metal shelf. Would you prefer to build your total stereo install using the solid metal shelf as the base? If not, your next best bet may be to get a sawzall and cut the hinges off for the seat bottom cushion. Your 97basic setup may be different than mine.

I will probably go with an aftermarket tach, but I have seen some nice gauge inserts for the dash with the tach in the dash, but many for the basic dash.

What about other years of seats? I assumed the bench/split bench would interchange, but I am curious about other years of seats that are interchangeable with the '97.

I still want/need the back seats, but occasionally we haul a lot of stuff back there and if I could just remove the top part of the seat when I am hauling stuff and put the seat back for the rest of the time, that would be ideal. But I am assuming I will just have to have the seat be permanently in the normal position and give up the fold down option.

BTW I thought of another question. Is there an aftermarket grill insert for a 97 style f150 that doesn't have the honeycomb/diamond pattern insert? All the ones I've seen say they only work on that style grill, or don't say anything at all. I am looking for something different, but not the tube billets that are all over the place.

about the grill, you can buy grills that will cover yours. I cut mine out w/ a Dremel and hacksaw and then made some mounting brackets. For the seats, I would assume anything up to the 04 Heritage would interchange.
