engine braking

:-( I have a 97 xlt explorer and have seemed to have lost my engine braking in low gear. Auto transmission. 4.0 liter. In second gear I have engine braking but in low gear there is no engine braking whatsoever. Going downhill it is as if I am in drive no matter if I start from a standstill or drop down below 20 mph using my brakes. If I shift up to second gear I get the appropriate engine braking for that gear and shift down again it is as if I am in drive. Now if I step on the gas in low gear I have all the proper torque for that gear...no matter the situation...I hope this makes sense and someone can tell me what I need to look for and hopefully something simple in the throttle body somewhere. Thank You........

engine braking

The valve body gasket in the transmission is blown out. It's a very common problem. You have to remove the trans pan and then the valve body to replace it.
