Just that I have seen this kind of build over and over again. It is what alot of the guys here have done. except the rods, because most of us here won't go over six grand. As memtioned by Sean they didn't do the oil mods or anything special. I would expect alot more from a Ford mag.JMO

imho they are. if you can keep your motor lubricated you shouldn't have many problems.

I agree, Ratsmoker's the man. He's almost my idol.

That said, if they had the oiling mods done right, I think they could have got away with stock 390 rods, assuming they were in good condition. Also, did you notice the specs of the first cam they were running in the 390? It looks to me like he was running the 941 first, then went to the 801. When he went to the 801 it slowed down. However, when they went to the 428 they screwed up the cam break in (noticing a pattern here???) so they went to a custom Crane hydraulic cam. I wonder what the 801 or the 941 would have done?

I remember hearing maybe in here, or somewhere i was reading that impropercam break in can result in what happend to that 428. Something to that effect anyways, they did do alot of cam swaping and when they broke one they threw the old one back in there and went with it. I dont know but that cant be great on an engine.

DF and I think William are the ones that taught me about the mods. They can both go into detail about the more extensive mods than I can. I would not be afraid to turn 6,750 if I had the cam and heads to do it with. I have heard several people claim 8,000rpm with stock rods and ARP bolts. I am not that brave. Econodrag turned 7,000 with stock rods and ford bolts! He did end up blowing the engine but it wasn't due to a rod letting loose.

That first cam was the 941 but the other was that single pattern cam that nobody uses because it isn't very agggressive. Then they went on to a big and lazy comp cam with 253 degrees of duration at .050 but only .585 lift. I don't really know what they were going after.

I am very confident that my engine would pull low 12s if it were in a mustang. A couple guys out there are running mid 12s with just the edel RPM package in their much heavier trucks.

I hope they kept their lifters sorted out. If they didn't, well, that could explain a lot.

Rat, you're right, that second one wasn't the 801.

Did anyone else notice they had different specs in the article and buildsheet at the end? Do they even know what they did to it?

i noticed that to Randy, i dont think they knew what they were doing or wanted to do with it from the get go, it kinda looks like a slop job and they didnt care much about it.

you know thats the idea i came up with, Im no professional but i sure as hell would have made a better cam choice from the get go. Just off of research I have found that their choices suck. Just by cam spec the engine looked a little on the lazy side for 12 seconds. I definatly felt like they didnt care.
