2002 EDGE Brake questions??
I have a 2002 EDGE, 4x4, 4.0, 5spd Manual Trans, and anti-loc brakes. Are there any special procedures required to replace the front brake pads? I've never worked on a vehicle with ABS, so I'm not sure of the process to insure proper operation. The truck has 11,000 miles and is due for pads, although there may be a problem as the pads on the driver side appear to be worn in an odd manner. I will try to explain: The passenger side looks worn normally except that the out board pad seems worn more than the inboard (isn't this unusual?) but the driver side out board pad is worn in a sort of cupped manner. The leading edge is thin and about 1/2" in it's thicker then thin in the middle and then thick again 1/2" before the trailing edge and then thin again. Does this point to a common caliper issue or is this fairly normal? Is there a way for me to post a picture here? My plan was to just replace the pads and not turn the rotors as the pads have not worn enough to cause any scoring of the rotors. The dealer wants $200 PLUS to rplace pads and that seems like a lot. Am I asking for problems dealing with it myself? I'm a fairly smart guy and have done countless brake jobs and pay attention to details. Any and all advice on this subject will be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,

As far as ABS goes, from what I hear, you do not want to push or compress the calipers and put force on the ABS module, but what you want to do is to carefully crack the bleeder screw as you compress the caliper, that way the pressure gets released there, keeping the fluid in the system going one way. You may need to the bleed the fronts if any air gets trapped in there.
Best thing to do though is to check for a manual. I've looked everywhere for a 2002, but they only go to 99 or 2000.
Good luck.

No special procedure for the ABS brakes. See the link I have in the tech info thread at the top of the forum.
Thanks for the quick replies. 11,000 seems a bit soon to me also, except for the fact that at least 90% of those miles were around town, in stop and go traffic. I get the part about cracking the bleeder, makes sense. Is there any special or different process for bleeding ABS as opposed to normal? Will gravity bleeding work OK?
Thanks Again,
Gene
P.S. Ken is there a way to post or have you post a pic of the abnormal pad wear? It might be of interest to others.

I took my Ranger to a brake shop for a second opinion and ti turns out that what I thought was cupping is actually just the original bevelled edges of the pads. As far as the wear issue, I was being "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" as the pads are only about 30% worn. I am used to brake work on full sized Ford and Chebby trucks which apparently have pads which are thicker than the ones on a Ranger. Thanks to all for the quick and knowledgeable responses.
Thanks,
Gene
P.S. to KEN: You said in the previous reply:
QUOTE: "All you need to do is upload the pic(s) to your web space and then put a link to it in the text. If your not familar with doing this I can do it for you."
I would like to become familiar with this process for myself. Please either post a reply here or email me with instructions, and also be aware that I have a MAC computer and let me know if that will cause any issues.
Thanks again

Then put this type of statement in the text, only it will be your space, http://www.members.aol.com/racsan99x/1988Mustang02.jpg with at the end. And you'll post a pic like this one of the HO 5.0 in my Mustang.
