Is backfiring normal?

Finally got to go camping last weekend, a lot of hilly winding roads, so I had to do a lot of downshifting(compression braking) so as not to overheat the brakes on the downgrades. When I do, the engine backfires a lot, managed to catch my wife by surprise every time. Is this okay, do I need to worry? My exhaust consists of long tube headers, and then straight pipes that exit just behind the cab on the passenger side. This is the truck in my sig.

backfiring during compression braking is "normal".

Yep, with that setup and downshifting on hills you'll get a bang or two, if your lucky you might even get to see a fire ball I love downshifting on hills while puling my 25' gooseneck with a tractor on (headers thru 2 1/2" flowmasters exiting infront of the back tires)

Usually it means you have an air leak somewhere in the exhaust system.

It can also be a sign of on rich mixture or a burnt exhaust valve or late timing. Use a vacuum gage to tell about the later two items and check you plugs burn pattern for the rich mixture. If you have it jetted for low altitudes and you were at a higher level that would answer for the rich mixture.
