Sub and speakers arnt gunna be the only thing your gunna have to worry about...If you want a good system that will sound good your gunna have to shop around for alot of things...sure a good sub is a semi start. But first youll want a good Deck, if you cheap out here itll cause your hole system to suffer. Then youll want some good mid-ranged speakers. These will be the door speakers / or dash. Then Look at a Sub or two, depends like these guys have said, what type of music you listen to, the size of your wallet and the space you've got. But doesnt matter how much you spend on the sub if you dont have a good amp. Need a really good one, and many people think if your amp is high watts then sub it will burn in out - not true, just need a good crossover to cut out sounds that shouldn't be played from a sub. So...you should read into it.
as a general rule of thumb, the better the speaker looks, the worse it is. i like polk momo. not just polk. when you add the momo on there, the quality is much better
Its not that i dont like JL, far from it, its the price. Plain and simple it is not and will never be worth as much as they ask for a simple electronic component, nor is it that much better than anyone elses that the price is justified.
I also have a JL sub in my Ranger. 10w0. I am running it at 170 watts RMS (340 max) and it is pretty clean. It is their bottom end sub but I think it performs like other companies' middle range subs.
i have 2 12" audiobahns i paid $100 each but that was at an extreme discount, they have 600 watts rms and 1200 watt peak each, and they sound good, but the main thing on all this speaker stuff is a good power source and a good environment, i mean if u have say a $300 sub in a crappy box it's going to sound crappy, but u can go to walmart get a $50 sub and put it in a good box that was built to last, it will sound good, i did that for a while, i had a lightning audio sub i paid $48 for it and it made my spine tingle, but i replaced it with the audiobahns and now i make people 3 cars away's spine tingle, but first u gotta make sure u have a good head unit, i have blaupunkt, used to have eclipse but that system got stolen, anyways go for quality and low price, anyways i prefer kicker or audiobahn for subs, infinity and kicker for your mids and highs, and alpine or blaupunkt for head, anyways thats good stuff for the buck
guys I have seen a ton of sub recomendations here....but subs alone will not do much for a system. You guys have all mentioned good subs. But what about amps? What about mid ranges that can keep up with the subs? What about amps for the midrange?
See what I am gettin at? I used to run a car audio store. Every kid wanted to come in with his $500 dollars and put together the hardest hitting car on the block. It just isnt possible. If all you want is bass...well then maybe it is possible.
In any case i can recomend any of the ADIRE AUDIO subs. They are the highest excursion... lowest distortion subs made right now. Get a BIG AMP and plenty of supporting speakers and power.
Most of the mainstream stuff is garbage and marketed to the masses. I don't want to get into a Rockford fosgate vs blah blah argument. Just be aware that there are some very small companies that produce the very best products. audiobahns for example are very over priced for what you get. decent drivers... but way to much.
we've come a long way since punch 45's and stroker 18's
true with what you said, but personally i got a good deal on the audiobahns, if you want to talk good quality and stuff like that then what about pheonix gold? arent they pretty good, and they do mid-bass amps and all that, but i also like kicker because they're local to me, and they make decent stuff, but really the best thing to do is research it, and see what u can get.. but also remember your system will only do what the wires in it let it, so upgrade your wires too
Definitely check out Polk Audio I have 4 Polk db570 5x7s in the corners and a Polk mm8024 8" sub under the drivers side rear seat (check the photos in my gallery) The head unit is an older Pioneer supertuner III and it runsthe 5x7s and a profile 400w(200w rms@4ohm) amp running the sub around $600 for the whole setup. I may add a seperate amp for the 5x7s later and possibly a second 8'' sub (the amp I have will run 380w rms @ 2ohm so I can run the 2nd sub off my existing amp. The systems great now but I get bored easy.
I would recommend Elemental Designs, Resonant Engineering, Dayton, Adire Audio, and many other before id recommend JL. WHile it is high quality, the price for what you get it ridiculous. Many other companies can hang with, or surpass JL in "bang for the buck".
I havent recommended ARC in a while so ill do this. ARC KAR 6.5's for your front, 5x7's for your rear. Arc KAR 400.4 to run your highs. An ARC KAR 1000.2 will get you 900w@ 4 ohms of real juice, cleanly, fo-eva, if you treat it right. KAR is arcs low line if you can even say anything arc is "low-line", and will be easier on pocket than JL.
2 dayton audio titanics or DVC's to round out the bass cheaply with a sub that sounds phenomenal sealed or ported, that has a 5 years warranty.
JL's greatest feat was not the line they carry, or the quality of it, no sir, it was marketing. As exhibited here.
Here we go again with the bogus hokus pokus here today gone tomorrow mobile audio companies. People like JL because they have stood the test of time. They are a household name. Marketing doesn't make a good company? Would Ford sell as many cars and trucks without advertisement? same goes for anything else. If it was purely word of mouth they would never sell. Obviously you are the only one preeching these companies thus their name is sold through word of mouth. People like to call a phone number for warranty or tech issues from the company they bought their components from and would like to hear someone pick up. Not a recording saying that the number you called is no longer in service. But for your sake buy what you like.
why does it matter? i dont see the point in getting all upset because he's challenging JL.. are you their sponsor? maybe you just like starting fights? how about people not argue but just share what they believe in, and not diss someone elses know-how?
ED had a good article in Autosound & Security a year or so back on their "New" 12" sub. I say "New" cuz it was new at the time, but not now. It recieved excellent marks all the way across the test. As far as Arc Audio, it's not a no-name. They've been around for awhile and build pretty good sub's, speaker's and amp's.
