Looking at swapping out the 5.0 in the truck. Besides the 4 CI difference, which would be better/worse for torque/horse power? I'm running an AOD with 4.10s. I'll be using GT40 heads, headers, dual exhaust, mass air (Mustang C3W1 EEC) & 73MM MAF. I'm looking for moderate HP and torq. Cruising speed is 1900-2000rpms. Max RPMs will be 4000.
I'm either going to stroke my engine now or build a 1972 351 block and put EFI on it.
I was in the same boat and decided to go to 351 for two different reasons. First off is the price of building a stroker 302 and second the 351 is built a little more stout than the 302, especially if you want your power to be in such a low RMP range. Well, that's what I did. it is just my two cents worth. The ultimate decision is up to you. Good Luck!
351 without a doubt. The 302 block is not an extremely strong block, it was ment to be lightweight for the mustangs. A full motor setup, the 351 weighs 75-100 lbs more than a 302. The block itself is built for trucks and is a lot stronger. The 351 will be cheaper and stronger...do the 351. Also, I would get a newer block because it's able to use roller lifters vs the old 72 block.
go the 351w route. i did and love it. just to let you know, you will need to get a flexplate from a late 80's Crownvictoria that had the 351/AOD combo. just because ford never put an AOD behind a 351 in a truck. its cheap to.

late
The AOD I got used came from an 88 Bronco and the owner said it had a 351 in it? Will I need a it due to ring gear teeth numbers difference? Did you go EFI or carbed? Roller or standard cam? (which one did you use) and what gears are you running?
my motor came from a 95f250 so it came stock with the roller cam. no bronco came with this combo so either he swapped the 351 in or swapped in the AOD. just make sure the flexplate has the correct 28oz balance weight on it. very very important. this setup is efi as well. just reused my entire harness from the 302 with no problems i did also get an ecu for the 351 as well. . gears im still stock, waiting to find a d44 for an sas then i will lift and gear at that time.

I've got a C6 flywheel with 28oz from a 351 setup. This will work right? Also, I'm using the Ford Mass air conversion (C3W1 EEC) with the harness overlay. I've been told that this will fire both banked or SFI the way it is wired from Ford. Have you heard about this?
What roller cam would be a good choice? Summit and Jegs kept listing mustang cams from Crane and Trickflow. The specs kept saying great mid range to top end. I'm more concernd for low to midrange torqe and horse power. I'll get to 4K RPMs max. I tow trailers occassionally and having a supercab with long bed, I'm pushing 6,700lbs already.
Call up comp cams or another cam company...one of their representatives will be able to help you pick out the correct cam. You should figure out what heads/valves/intake...etc etc..you're going to use before you decide on the cam profile. They will ask you that information...as well as how much power you're looking to make. You're going to want a motor that revs over 4k...5500ish is what the stock motors run to. You might not rev it that high, but you don't want a redline of only 4k rpm. Definitely go for low-mid range power/torque though. You'll also want a cam that will provide a good idle for daily driving.
im not sure about the c-6 flexplate. i just know when i swapped from a 302 to the 351 i needed to get a flexplate from an 80's crownvic for the 351/aod setup.
now for a good cam you can run 35-225-5 is on that plenty of guys trucks and love it. they are still running speed density. as for the mass air kit you speak of im not sure. check out fordfuelinjection.com and speak to ryan, he can tell ya for sure.
If that is the Comp Cams for computer controlled (351W) EFI, the camshaft part number is 35-255-5. The operating range is 1000 to 5200 rpms. The cam grind number is XE254H. The duration @ 50 intake 210 exhaust 214. The valve lift w/a 1.6 rocker/ intake .478 exhaust .485. The lobe separation angle is 114 degrees.
