I have been getting this light for some time. In the short term everytime I do something to cure the light it eventually shows back up. In the last 2 months I have replaced the exhaust system with SS catback Flow Masters (it needed replaced). Replaced both O2 sensors (code showed 1130 & 1131) this worked fine until I took a 600 mi trip running around 85mph and now the codes show PO171 & PO174 which indicate a lean situation. Does anyone have a clue as to what is happening?? Previous to the O2 sensors I had added a Jet performance chip and a K&N cold filter system. The truck is a "97" Ranger 4.0.
How are you resetting the CEL? Are you doing it with the code reader? Just guessing, but maybe if you remove the neg bat terminal for a few minutes, and reset the computer, it may go away. Did the problem show up after you added the chip or the filter system?
The CEL has been coming on intermmitently for about a year. In just the last 3 months I have done the work I described. The light would normally go out after a couple of days of regular in city driving. The truck started running rough and the light became a
problem when I moved from 60miles east of Indiananpolis to 25 miles north of Detroit in Oct. last year ( can't believe this move is relative to my problems). The truck has 91000 miles on it (all put on by me)
With the K&N filter, you probably have a contaminated MAF sensor, making it run lean. Try cleaning your MAF sensor, and if I were you, I would go back to the OEM paper air filter....
Check all vacuum lines for deterioration, cracks etc., check for exhaust leaks before the 02 sensors, make sure your PVC system lines are secure and the valve is seated tightly. Unmemeted air getting into the engine is what you are looking for.
A clogged fuel filter or fuel injectors, or a bad pump, can interfere with the proper delivery of fuel and cause lean conditions.

LIGHT TRUCK: 1997 AEROSTAR, RANGER 4.0L ENGINES ONLY
This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to correct the part number listed, revise the Service Procedure, and add Aerostar.
ISSUE:
A rough idle, stalling at an idle and/or Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0171, P0174, P1131, and/or P1151 may be stored in memory on some vehicles with a 4.0L engine. This may be caused by the gasket located between the fuel rail and lower intake manifold losing its compressive loading and becoming drawn into the intake manifold runners resulting in a vacuum leak.
ACTION:
Replace the fuel rail-to-intake manifold paper gasket with a revised gasket.
