I have a 1979 Ford F-150 SuperCab, and am having a wiring problem with my turn signals. My turn signals were giving me problems by not flashing all the time. So I went and replaced the flasher along with the rear bulbs on both sides, and thought that this would solve the problem. It did for a while, but now my back up(reverse) lights don't work at all. I was told that I need to get a turn signal switch for the truck. Before I go to the dealership and fork out $98.42, is there anything I can do prior. I have checked all the bulbs, and they are good. There are no loose wires connecting the sockets to the bulbs. I have put a meter the socket connections and they are getting power. It is a pain operating the turn signals manually, and I have to back up carefully, because the lights don't come on by themselves. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I am a new member, and just enjoy the questions, comments, and responses given by fellow members. John
John, just for clarification, when you say your turn signals don't flash, do you mean they don't even light up, or do you mean they light up and just stay lit without flashing?
And what does your meter say about the backup light socket connections?
Does the backup light socket connection show battery voltage with the transmission in reverse? And does the backup socket housing show continuity back to the negative battery post?
John,
Welcome aboard!
1. The backup lights are a pain but, if you are getting power to them then 90% of the battle is won. Chances are, your bumper is not grounded to the frame. Please add a ground strap or clean the bumper mounting points. If this does not work then ensure that the body to motor ground is present and clean. I recently created one for my 78 F150 and it cleaned up multiple problems.
2. Your turn signals. Another classic short coming with these old trucks. Everything works and then it doesn't. If your grounds are clean, the flasher is new and the bulbs are good, then bulb sockets are shot. They are suseptible to vibration which eventually ruins them. Again, a body to motor ground strap could cause this problem. I think, I'm seeing a pattern here?!
Check for a ground strap, it usually goes from the back of the intake manifold to the fire wall. this may solve your problem.
Good Luck,
