I have just changed my spark plugs and on the third plug from the front on a inline 6 cylinder engine ( 89 F-150 ) there was alot of tan colored hard build up all around the side of the spark plug... It still sparked ... All the others plugs were fine... I have 240,000 miles on the engine.. All else seems fine... When I start the engine it runs a bit rough and I can hear some tapping as though the lifters are filling up but then it goes away. I started a while back using the Supertech synthetic oil from Walmart.. I am thinking that maybe it is because of this that maybe the build up happened am I wrong?
Also I noticed the spark plugs were mostly loose when I was taking them off.. And the one that had all the build up was coated with oil even on the outside..
If you know about this type problem can you fill me in? Thanks!

Reason: remembered something more
Don't know what the problem is, But I'll bump you back up to the top of the page.
How much oil is that engine using? I think your choice of oil is fine. If the plug has oil on the outside, maybe you are getting some arcing there also?
Here is a link to a site that has more about oil than a sane person would ever want to know.
Thanks! Oil, It was a queart low yesterday before I changed it but it was a while since I checked it. Yes I have heard some arcing once in a while but at the time I was not sure what was happening but now I know it was arcing. I was very surprised to see before I changed the plugs how loose they were. I was thinking could it be that the plug was not working (faulty) so much. Because when I would start the engine it would be so rough for a while until it got warmer. Now with new plugs it start fine with very little roughness. It feels like it has more power too.
If you can keep the oil off of the outside of that plug to control the arcing, it may keep that buildup off of the plug. The other thing I would be curious about would be the compression on that cylinder. With that many miles, you may be a little low on compression and running cooler on that cylinder.
I see what you are saying. I will keep an eye on any oil leakage, I think it was because the plugs were loose.. and oil was coming out... I really do not have a way to check the compression... I do remember hearing an arcing sound but now that I changed the plugs I will be specially mindful of hearing it. Thanks!
