new to board, engine question?
Hello,
I am new to the board and have a difficult task to accomplish.
Currently I am in Iraq and my spouse is having problems with our 1995 Econoline 150 (5.8 ltr). She is not very mechanical and I can only diagnose so much over the phone, and with her in Germany the locals don't help much due to language barrier and the lack of large V8 engines.
The issue is a knocking sound that she describes as possibly coming from the alternator, but I am not sure of that since it sounds more engine based (over the phone
. So I am basically looking for ideas to assist her before she drives it 14 miles to the garage on the military base.
What are some common failures in these engines? The fluid levels are all ok, coolant was just flushed and thermostat replaced before I departed...we have never had any issues with it so I am at a loss.

There is an air pump right under the alternator, if it's anything like my 90 F250. It might make a thumping sound if something came unhooked. Or possibly a cracked exhaust manifold or even a noisy lifter on that right side behind the alternator.

Well I was able to get good news as it's only the idler pulley bearing, so I had her order a new one as well as tensioners and a new belt. I am happy for this as I was thinking dollar signs and something major.
