Question injector 93 4.9 efi question

I have often wondered, as i have tried to up my pulling power if or at what point changing the injestors may be of help or necessary ?

Do they wear out?

Has anyone found a performance injectors for the 4.9 or can you step up to 5.0 injectors?

Or is this something i should just leave alone....
Thanks for you input

Dustin

If you do a search you will find an article where someone put in 5.0 injectors along with an adjustable pressure regulator. In theory, you could use that on a stock motor or one that has been modified.

on a side note, i believe silverstreak added larger (#19) injectors to his basically stock engine and didnt notice much if any difference. he'll be along to add his insite to this eventually...i hope, lol...

The 300-6 and 460 both have light blue injectors. 302 and 351 engines have orange injectors. The injector must be matched to the volume of the individual cylinder. The light blue injectors have a larger flowing capacity. Replacing them with 5.0 injectors would be a bad move. All ford push rod EFI engin injectors are the size dimensionally. The color indicates the flow rate. Larger injectors wouln't change a thing. The computer will still inject the amount of fuel required. The flow rateing is the maximum amount the injector will flow.

actually i have to disagree 96f350. IIRC all ford v-8s use orange top injectors and the 300 uses #14 lb-hr injectors (dont remember the color). also the 300 has a higher then normal fuel pressure to overcome the design of the intake which is can cause fuel starvation due to the fuel rails having the fuel evaporate before it reaches the engine. if u read the articles u'll understand why.

The 14# injectors are light grey. On a 300 they actually flow 17.1# because of the higher pressure drop.
Light blue are 24#

Depending on BSFC and how far you're willing to push the duty cycle, the stock injectors on a 300 are good for somewhere between 164 and 192 HP

As others have said, this is a waste of time and money on a near stock engine as far as power production is concerned. I have run 14, 19 and 24 lb injectors on the street and track and there is no power difference between them that is measurable. Before I go on I'll say that my truck has Hedman headers, offroad y pipe, and 3" exhaust as the only airflow enhancement mods. These mods (and probably a mild cam or the stock cam with port work) can be handled by the stock injectors. However, the computer is operating well out of its comfort zone in this trim. Anytime the battery is disconnected or the PCM loses power it takes a few hundred miles for it to relearn. For that few hundred miles it runs absolutely horrible. With the larger injectors and an adjustable regulator the truck is running much more closely to "zero trim" and runs much better after the memory is reset. The larger injectors also provide crisper throttle response than the stockers on my truck, but this could be attributed to the exhaust work and may not be the case on a stock truck.
