Diesel in F 150?

I have owned a 93 F 250 and 2000 SD both diesel. I no longer need that big of a truck and am considering a new F150 but I still prefer diesel power. Has anyone heard about the possibility of a smoker F150 in the next year or so?

I don't know when it will come out, but Ford has Cummins working on a V6 diesel for the F-150. The engine in Ford's new medium duty cabovers, a 4.5L PowerStroke diesel with a Torqshift trans, was the engine that was going to go in F-150's.Supposedly Ford did not think Navistar the necessary R&D on the 6.0L PSD.

Ford would probably sell alot with the diesel. One reason people don't want a diesel is because they don't want a SuperDuty. F-150: better ride, better turning radius, and so on
And it's something that nobody else offers. You can bet that as soon as it debuts, GM or Dodge will start working up something to compete with.
The thing would probably get near 26 MPG.

Dodge already has one being developed by Mercedes for the Ram 1500 and SUV's.

GM would probably come out with the 6.2L diesel again!!!! (just kidding) They were the only one to offer the diesel in the half ton for many years. Must have quit for some reason. Maybe the oil companies paid them because it was too good on fuel?

I am pretty sure that the big three know exactly what the other is doing (insiders). So if one is going to debut a new diesel in a small pickup, the other will do it right away too.

With the new diesel, ford should put the hybrid technology into it as well. Can you imagine!!! 30+ mpg unloaded in a 5500 lb truck. Sounds good to me Bill.

I heard Ford was going to develop there own diesel motor for the 150. I read that somewhere. GM used to put diesels in there half ton trucks and cars. Ford just put diesels in there HD trucks. Ford sure could corner the half ton market with a diesel in there half ton. People would forget about the hemi in a hurry. Boy that would be a great thing. Im sick of hemi this hemi that.

The International 6.0L is an awesome engine. Ford screwed it up with their own computer programming, fuel system specs, poor service, and inability to address some initial problems promptly. You won't find many problems with the 6.0L in International's own truck applications, and they are heavier duty.

I just dont see a new diesel for the 150 being a powerhouse. The only reason that Ford would build the 150 diesel is to help the fuel economy numbers. I would be willing to bet that the diesel in the 150 will not produce better performance numbers than the current 5.4L 3V. There will certainly be available upgrades to increase the performance but for my dollar, I would rather buy the 5.4L install a Whipple or Kenne Bell supercharger and get on with it. I will be out the same money. I might be able to pull a trailer more easy with the diesel but if I had a trailer to pull all the time, I would opt for the 250 or 350. More importantly I would opt for the new Hurricane over a diesel in the 150 all day long.

Hope I am wrong but you can only do so much with a half ton truck. I do think the diesel will sell but dont get your hopes up that it will be a monster like the 6.0L.

As far as it not being a powerhouse in the f150, the 4.5 v6 is rated at 250 hp and 440 lb/ft in the cabover lcf. It is also twin turbo to enhance spool-up at low rpm. I think it would walk all over the 5.4 and double the mpg's doing. I would love to have one, but don't think I want to wait till 07 to get one.

Of course the new diesel isn't going to be the same as the 6.0 L. If 3Lstroker is right with those numbers, it will kill the gas motor in towing. Chevy's old 6.5 L diesel was only rated at 195 h.p. and 430 ft-lbs. Obviously it wasn't going to beat a gas motor in a race but it sure pulled better. The fuel mileage was around 23-25 mpg on these trucks which isn't lots better than what the dealer claims the gas motors should get but it certainly gets that mileage more consistently and loads better when towing. Chevy used to sell lots of trucks with the diesel in it, I think they switched because they could easily match or better the performance with a smaller gas motor. Just to show you that the diesel is better than the gas, why do most city buses use the chevy 6.5 L diesel. Must have some benefits.

My Powerstroke has a 4-position chip (stock, +60 hp, +80 hp, and +120 hp) and some other minor mods. Total power add ons were about $500. The truck is a long box crew cab F-350 4X4 which weighs in at just under 8000 lbs (4 tons). It blows the doors off my 5.4L Screw, and will out run just about any vehicle in town. Tires smoke like hell. Lots of fun blowing the ricers away.

If you haven't driven a diesel lately, you should. They rock, and I'd take one (any one) in the F-150 in a heartbeat.

From what I understand on the diesels is that most auto companies are waiting until the more stringent '07 diesel regulations come out to make their move in the diesel market. I think that this requires a lower sulphur diesel fuel (higher cost at the pump) and more diesel pollution control in the truck (more sticker price).

I have had the chance to drive the new powerstroke and it is incredible. Very quiet and very quick. Hopefully we will be pleasantly surprised.

I believe the Diesel would be great for the F-150, however that $4-5K option would turn buyers off real fast. Get the cost down and customers will buy them.

I think some folks miss the point of a big diesel in a 1/2 ton truck. Ford will put a smaller diesel for milage only. The rest of the truck, brakes and suspension, won't be up to the task of pulling {and stopping} heavier loads. So Ford {or any other truck maker}will not tempt fate by putting a stump-puller diesel {like the 6.0 or 7.3 PSD} in an F-150. Can you say lawsuit anyone?? I've pulled a heavy trailer with a 1/2 ton and pull the load it will, but stopping was a %&+#@!!! That's why I drive an F-250 PSD now!
