Push Button 4X4 not working on 1991 explorer

Push Button 4X4 not working on 1991 explorer
I have a 91 explorer with a manual 5spd and push button 4 wheel. When I push on the 4x4 button I hear clicking in the back left of the vehicle (I assume the controller for the 4 wheel) but nothing else happens. The vehilce still still is in 2 wheel. Is there anyway to troubleshoot this?

Hello there , how is it going? I have a 91 explorer also ,although mine is an automatic. I was having a similar problem where i would push my button, and either I would get that same clicking sound, or nothing at all would happen. I know that this sounds crazy, but I went under the truck with a rubber mallet and hit the 4 wheel drive motor a few times with my friend in the seat pressing the button,,and walla!! It has been fine since. I read somewhere that the motor could freeze up if it has not been used in a while.
Anyway I hope that my experience helps a little bit.

Push Button 4X4 not working on 1991 explorer
I had a 92 w/ push button 4X4. Thelast winter I had, the first time that I went to use it, I pressed the button and it just clicked like you've mentioned. It did this for several minutes and I pressed the button several times. Finally, it came on and worked fine the rest of the winter. So, I second your advice sbfd!
