'97 4x4 with the electric engage. When I disengage the front axle an intermittant ringing/clanging, as in metal-on-metal, can be heard when the truck is driven. I think it really sounds like two sets of gears trying to mesh or a splined shaft just barely nicking the edge of the female part it joins with. It'll carry on like this for a few miles then it stops.
Thinking it might be a bad vacuum servo I watched it operate as someone else cycled the engagement switch through 4HI and 4Low. The rod extending out the side of the servo will pull in but will not extend out unless i pull it out. Doesn't seem right to me.
If anyone can explain how this servo should work I'd appreciate it. And if you have any ideas on the ringing/clanging sound I'd appreciate that too.
