Hi, Last weekend I went to a wrecking yard in search of what was supposed to be a mint 56 cab. I found the cab and it is in very good condition, however it is a 55. I have a 55 cab from my parts truck so I went out and checked up on an idea that I have. It looks to like you can take the roof and cowel section off in one piece. The joints are along the top of the firewall and the back of the cab. it also looks like the dash is welded to the cowel area. Has anyone out there ever done such a project? Any oldtime bodymen? I have a 56 cab, but the corners need to be replaced and the floor needs some work. If this is not that big a job, it would be cheaper and easier than repairing the damaged parts of the cab I have. Thanks. Ozzie
When I was deciding how to replace the roof on my cab, I contemplated that approach. Unfortunately, I seem to recall the area above the hood hinge mounts is problematic. I opted to drill the spot welds and pull the roof skin off. I have pictures on my web site. Go to my Project Archive and check out the July 2003 pages. It shows how I removed the roof skin and what the joints look like. Let me know if you want any more information.
If you replaced the top of the 55 cab with the top of a 56 cab I think it would cause problems with the doors too unless the bottum of a 56 door is the same as the bottom of a 53-55 door. I think to do it and have your dash and doors fit would require replacing the whole front of the cab with the roof. I think it would probably be easier to replace the cab corners and floor on your 56.
I know the 56 cab is favored, but if the 55 cab is in such good shape, why not switch the whole cab? Afew bolts is all it really takes, and it would be a shame to cut up a good cab to save another one. I put the 55 cab on my 56 and really like not hitting my knees on the windshield getting in and out of the truck.
I don't know for sure and that is why I was asking. It lools like if you take the roof and cowel section off, the dash comes with it. I was thinking it may be easier to change the top of the cab instead of the bottom. I want the 56 cab, I have owned 53s, 54, and 55s, it is time for a 56. Ozzie
Ozzie 1, In addition to a hood I also need a clean 55 Rating Plate ( V.I.N. Plate) off the glovebox to try and title this project truck of mine. Any chance it's still on the 55 cab you saw in the wrecking Yard? Thx. David
Thx. for the offer, but It really is going on a 55 with the Approp. hood, grill and ornamentation. I'm going as close to stock as possible. I'm sure if I'm patient, I'll find a 55. David
A local owner had a 55 and the cab was in pretty rough shape, he opted and found a 56 cab in pretty nice condition had been worked over buy a shop in south Texas. The owner of the 56 cab opted out and bought a nice 57 F-100. So the body shop sold the 56 cab only.Well We went to south Austin and trailered back the new rebuilt 56 cab. A lot had to be done to the 55 frame to accept the 56 cab. That really surprised me, thinking this was a simple swap a local body shop did a lot of the work. It was completed last year. You can tell and see the difference, from my 55.AJ
