I need Help

ok, i've got the chance to buy a 92 GMC 1ton dually with a 6.5 turbo diesel. they're asking 4500 for it or he said 4000 cash, if yall could take a look at my truck on my gallery i was wondering if yall think i could sell mine for 3,500. i REALLY want a diesel, but this one has 240,000miles on it, and it is a chevy diesel so i'm catuious about it, a diesel should last to 300K+ but like i said it's a chevy, my truck has 130,000 miles now. what do yall think? wait for another diesel truck or do yall think i should jump on this one?

tell us more about the GMC. Is it manual or automatic? 2 or 4 wheel drive? What kind of cab does it have? Is the body solid, i.e. no rust, dents, dings, etc.? You're buying the whole truck, and at 240K pretty much everything is worn, so unfortunately it's likely the truck will nickel and dime you to death.

ok, well the truck is a 5speed 2wheel drive, looks really good, but looks can be deciving, he says teh injectors and pump have been rebuilt, but i'll want to se documentation on that. it's in about as good of shape as my ford, and i don't have any complaints about it(execpt power and the gas milage). but my friends have an 88 4x4 crew cab ford 6.9 with banks turbo and i think a 6speed manual and they say it gets 16-18MPG(sounds a little high don't you think?)

The 6.5 is prone to have bad injector pumps. Otherwise they are supposed to be pretty good. Why would you want to sell one used truck to buy anbother used truck, just for the diesel? Doesn't seem worth it because you already know the truck you own now.

because i'm only 17, and i was raised in an all GM family, except my mothers side which is all ford and volvo(not sure why the volvo) so even if i could afford a new truck it'd be a base model 6banger, so i'd rather have an older truck with more options, also cheaper insurance.

If it were my decision, I'd keep the truck you already have. But it's not, and if you like the diesel rig, I would spend an hour or so with it. Look it over with a fine-tooth comb and a skeptical mindset. I'd take somebody else along too for a second opinion. Look the body over closely. Crawl underneath it and just look at things for a few minutes. Look for fluid leaks, check the steering linkage for wear, check the exhaust, stuff like that. Check the tires for wear, since it's a dually a set of tires would be quite pricey. You should expect to have to spend some money on the truck, I'd want to get an idea of how much. Sleep on it, and if you still like it the next day then buy it.

The other thing is, what are you going to do with the utility of a dually? Those are very big, wide trucks and take some getting used to. Going to have a very stiff ride. Thats A LOT of extra weight to be carrying around w/o a need for it. The other guys are right, that 240k mi is going to nickle and dime you to death. But we can't deside for you, basically you have to sit down and think about the pros and cons. If its just a engine you want, why not get a lighter duty truck that has one, rahter than a dually?

Primary rig is:
95' F-150 EB 300/6 5 spd with 4" Superlift, MSD, Ram Air, Gibson Exhaust, 32" BFG Muds
NEW PICS IN MY GALLERY!! :-)

Then theres:
88' F-250 Superduty 351 + c6
95' Mercury Cougar 4.6L V-8
80' E-350 300/6 and a
3 spd column shifter baby. Top speed, 65mph, Go Baby Go!

The newest addition to the Ford family is a 99' Mustang GT 4.6L

One more thing to add, since its a dually, it was purchased for one thing in mind, towing. I'm sure its had a pretty tough life.

Well this is my opinion, you say you are leary about a chevy, it has alot of miles. SO I wouldn't buy it, I mean you already have a truck to run around in, so wait until you find what you want. I drove a fully loaded Nissan Altima for 7 months before I found my truck, I am glad I waited. The trucks I looked at all had a few glitches I wasn't sure about, I knew a few people who bought them only to have them go bad. Just wait, what you want you will find, ya just need to excersise some patience. All good things come to those who wait. Yeah I know its cliche, and it stings, but lets face it our parents are right most of the time.

Personally, I wouldn't touch it. I've heard nothing but bad about the 6.5, its a chevy, it's got 240k, it was bought with hard work in mind. Just my opinion. Also, in my experiance it's always a good idea to take an unbiased friend with you. What I do is, I take my dad with me and tell him to find everything wrong with it he can (believe me he finds alot) and I find everything I like about it. Then at the end we compare notes, and figure out what needs fixing and what is good. It's a good system because since I want the truck (or whatever)I'm prone to overlook the bad stuff. And because my dad's indifferant, he finds alot of bad stuff. I mean, you never know, maybe the guy took superb care of it and it's got another 100k in it but, it's got strikes against it.

One more thing:

Who is selling the GMC? Is it an individual, a dealer, a company, who? That would make a difference with me, you can maybe tell a little about the truck's history that way.

Run away from that truck. My dads business has a 93 6.5 TD 1 ton dually with a dump bed on it. It is flat out the worst truck we have ever owned. It eats up flywheels about once or twice a year. The electrical system is pathetic and the tranny has never been right even after two rebuilds.
But if you really want a GM with a diesel we have great 93 with a dump bed and a lot less miles (65K) than the truck you are looking at. I'll make you a hell of a deal.

I personaly don't care for the GM 6.5 diesel or the older 6.2 diesel.
They are good for fuel mileage but they don't have as much get up and go as the ford diesels. I would keep looking for something better. I looked at a used 96 chevy with the 454 4X4 with duallys but $10,000 seemed too much to me.
If I got a gas it would have been a chevy. Something about the diesels just feels right for me. Love them international engines!!!
