i have a 2002 ford ranger edge. theres a squeaking noise that comes from under the hood. i replaced the idler pulley with no success and also checked the belt for worn spots but seen none(seems to brand new, i just bought the truck).
the squeaking seems to be worse when accelerating and general driving. if you could help i would appreciate it greatly.
could have a bad bearing somewhere. i am assuming you can replicate the noise while in park by giving it gas. cut a piece of garden hose and use it like a stethiscope to try to locate the noise. maybe waterpump or alternator?
yes revving the engine up causes the same noise i wil try the water hose ideal. im 17 and not experienced much with repairs but what do you think could more than likely be the problem.
Along with el conquistador's advice, check the belt to make sure it is tracking properly in each pulley. Also, check each pulley to make sure it is clean and is not harboring harded crud, etc; this debris could allow slipping of the belt and subsequent noise. You can clean the pulleys (after the belt is removed) by using a nylon brush and some carb cleaner or brake cleaner. With the pulley removed, check the pulley on the tensioner for loosness and spin it to check the bearings. Also, look at the ribbed side of the belt for debris etc and clean if/as needed. IMHO, your last post suggests belt slippage or improper belt installation (hint = new belt when you bought the truck).

dump some water on the belt while its running, if it stops then the belt or pullys are dirty. you can clean it or get a new belt. best to get a new belt and make sure all the pullys are clean and tight. then you can have the old one as a spare in case somthing happens on the road.
Whew. I'm not the only one that keeps a bunch of used parts in my truck 'just in case!'
I also keep all my tools in my truck, wire, various connectors, spare this and that, tarps, sleeping bag, and of course duct tape and jbweld. This is what too many years of driving a VW with 200k+ miles on it will do to a person.
I had a reoccuring belt squeal for a while, even with new belts. I'd been told that many non-ford belts weren't exactly the right size so they pulled the tensioner pulley out of alignment, and Ford wanted $73 bucks for one! People told me to get a gates belt. So I did, and also cleaned all of the pulleys good before I put it on. That was more than 10k miles ago, not a noise from it since then.
