My stereo solution
Anyway, here's my fix. I bought a Pioneer CD/MP3 player (I didn't have any good place for a CD changer and since you can get up to 17 hours of MP3s on one CD I figured this was the next best thing). I bought two 4 inch speakers to go in the door. I bought the dual 3 inch speakers from LNC that is supposed to fit right in the dash where the old one came out... it didn't! The single speaker in the LNC book said it was for '67-'71. The dual speakers said for '67-'72. Perhaps the dual speaker was not actually intended for '72. Perhaps it's just my '72 F100 Ranger XLT that it didn't fit right in. I had to take off the dash pad so that I could drill 4 new holes in my dash to mount the speaker. Have I mentioned that it is incredibly hard to drill a hole at the angle required due to the windshield being there? Anyway, the dual speakers sound great.
Because I didn't want to put a hole in my nice door panel, I had to put the hole in the bottom of the door dangerously close to the seat. I was concerned with the positioning of the speakers so close to the seat, so I bought an amp to boost the sound.
When I finally figured out the wiring (this was my first time undertaking a project of any difficulty on any vehicle), I had to spend a great deal of time trying to figure out the bracket for the radio. What I did was bend the ears back and used the hole for the old radio ***** as a place to screw through to the radio mounting hole. I was also able to rig the old bracket behind the radio--it just doesn't screw down to the support like it once did (doesn't line up), it just holds the back of the radio up.
Anyway, the amp went under the seat without any difficulty. When I can get the time to move the gas tank, I will probably mount a subwoofer to the back of the cab. Until then, I don't thump, but it is plenty loud enough for me. In fact, when I got out of the truck, and closed the door, I could just barely hear the music.
Sorry for the long post, just a very happy (very tired) camper.
My next great feat will be an attempt at remote keyless entry.
PS. by the way, I did put plastic over the speakers on the inside of the door. Thanks to the posts I have read. Otherwise, I would not have known to do so.
