I thought this subject would be fun to toss around. You ever hear a song where the lyrics make you think,Hmmm,I wonder what he meant by that? One song that stands out in my mind is Hotel California, where he sings, please bring me my wine and then he sings,we havent had that spirit here since 1969.Do you think he meant spirit as in>Now thats the spirit,or the wine being a spirit?Or how about the Stones where Jagger sings in Jumpin Jack Flash,I was raised by a toothless bearded hag,Was he mad at his mom or did he have a real ugly nanny?Or maybe Guns and roses,Is it true that every cowboy sings a sad sad song?Well,it is like Led Zepplin says, cause you know some time words have two meanings.
I think he meant spirit as in the wine. The lyric, 'every cowboy sings a sad, sad song' wasn't GNR, it was the group Poison, every rose has a thorn. Too many to list, very few make sence to me. From Judy Garland and 'over the rainbow', where is that exactly? To anything Alannis Morisette sings .
Guns 'n' Roses didn't sing that song, KT. Poison did. It's called "Every Rose Has It's Thorn."
Anyway, I have to agree with you there. That one line does make you wonder if every cowboy does sing really sad songs.
How about AC/DC's "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap?" Just what type of dirty deeds get done?
Cyanide, neck ties,ok I get that part, but what does he mean when he says,For a fee,Im happy to be your back door man?Never mind I aint going there. And your right,it was poison,I had a brain phart.
I didn't know that about Bon Scott.....The Doors also had a song called Back Door Man. I thought it meant to sneak in the back door while the man was away. I just figured they were singing about the same thing.
Yeah, I didn't believe it at first either. But as it was explained to me, he was "supposedly" singing about himself. But that was just one take on it. Another take was there really "was" some other guy with his woman. I usually don't read into the lyrics too much, but when any suspision is aroused, it warrants further investigation.

I believe being a back door man is taking care of his woman for him....not the other thing.
I believe you're right. This has it's roots in blues music that goes way back. "The men don't know, but the little girls understand", kinda tells the story...sometimes refered to as "another mule kickin' in my stall".
i always liked the Doors lyrics, all kinds of hidden stuff. all about the shaman and what kim morrison had going on. very gothic for what was going on in sunny california in the late 60s. riders on the storm is fun, talks about oedipus(greek mythology). its crazy stuff

Hotel California is about the founding of the Satanic Church, which happened in 1969 by Anton LaVay. The "spirit" is a reference to the wine as a spirit (as all alcohol is), but specifically in reference to its use as part of the Christian sacrament of Holy Communion.
Note: I'm not intending to start a religious discussion here, this is just the interpretation of the song I've always heard.
Man,I just got done researching Hotel California, and no it is not about any cults or stuff like that.Don Henley himself thinks it is funny how people get that idea, and according to the Eagles website the song had more to do with the recording industry. And another thing I found out was that the reference to steely knives was a reference to Steely Dan.Too Cool. One other thing I found,Timothy Schmit(sp) sang vocals for alot of bands, rock, country,r&b,one talented singer, and what a voice!

i saw a interview with Glen Fry one time he said hotel California was about his ( or Henley's can't remember which) stay in a southern Ca rehab center. Schmitt's a solid bassist too. try to play the bass line for Hotel Ca. it's harder than it sounds.
