Hello, I need to replace the windshield on my 1988 f350, and would like some advice. Is this sealed with just a rubber gasket? or do I need other product.
to remove the old cracked glass, what is the best method?
I have read about removing the trim, will have to try..
My biggest fear is that I will crack the replacement glass.
Oh I read about the rope in the channel, don't understand it but if i see it , should understand.
greg:i've been a glazier for 15 years,i have replaced at least 20,000 windshields
your windshield part # is dw1099sh.herein canada wholesale price is $63.00
urethane and primers are about $50.00.you need a windshield cut out knife
to cut the urethane or olfa knife with lots of patience.it will take you at least
3 hours.it is my advice to you to just pay a shop to do it.most here will do it for
$200 taxes in plus you'll have a WARRANTY ok
Use a piece of piano wire thru the putty (can't remember the name of the stuff...and it's not urethane on a an 88.) wrap the ends around a wooden dowel each end and you and a friend saw back and forth pulling thru the putty. Use some wooden shim wedges to separate the old winsshield from the frame. Should take you about 20 minutes at most. Clean all the old putty out and lay a new 2" round bead on the lip of the frame. There are a couple of alignment marks o nthe windshield (find them on the old one and mark the pillar where they are. You and the friend lift the new one carefully into place and press lightly on the glass to get a seal. You can make this easier if you do this in the sun (makes the putty soft.). Keep pressing around the perimeter until you can see putty adhering to the glass all the way around. Put the trim on and your good to go.
Kicked the busted one out of my 87, cleaned up the old, laid a bead of new putty, set the new glass in and was on the road in UNDER 2 HOURS. My 17(now 20) year old "helped" by staying out of the old man's way.
Never leaked!!!
1988 the windshield SHOULD BE urethaned in.because thats how they came from the factory.urethane has about 1000psi where as BUTYL TAPE has 20psi rating.so if you roll your baby over in an accident,or if your in a head on collision you'll be safe.that's why i recomend you take it to a shop.if you use urethane with out primers(even if its primerless)you wil have a bond failer.what does that mean to you.leaker or worse your life!!!i've seen lots of poor installations.ones where i didn't have to even cut out.they
fell out my friend
