Lacquer primer

I’m just getting started on the cab bodywork. I have work in various locations, my plan is to blast the whole cab then shoot it with a lacquer primer for protection from the humidity during the repair process. I thought the lacquer for the ease of sanding off near my repair areas. In the end I would like to use an epoxy primer for the finish, will this be a problem with the lacquer primer.

I haven't painted anything in a long time, but always prefered lacquer primer/surfacer to build up and work with, but it's not a sealer. Moisture will get through and rust. I'd either use the epoxy to start with or put some cheap paint over that primer until you're ready to do the "real" paint job.

Lacquer primer will cause you problems ! Start with the epoxy primer at the beginning because a quality repair and paint is only as good as it's base. Just my 2 cents. GOOD LUCK!

After I got my box down to bare metal I wiped it down with wax-silicon remover. As a basecoat I used epoxy primer and then over top of that I'm going to put a couple coats of 2K urathane primer surfacer. I was going to go with lacquer, but the paint shop told me it was old technology and for a few extra dollars I can have the 2K urathane which is more durable.

All are giving you great advise. Lacquer is old tech. Epoxy seals in any micro-rust and seals out water. Your correct order of business is...

Epoxy
Do your body and filler work
Epoxy over the filler.
2K urethane
Blocksand
Your choice of topcoat

Thanks for all the input sounds like epoxy will be the way to go, and just grind it off at the repair sites for welding and filler. Then epoxy agin.

Remove the epoxy primer where you will be welding but...

For simple filler work (where no welding is involved), just scratch the epoxy with 80 grit and do your filler work over the epoxy.

I have been applying filler directly to epoxy primer for some time. The idea is to lock the filler in. Matter of fact, PPG recommends the same procedure.

I use R-M (EP series) epoxy primer. I suspect it doesn't really matter though as long as it is rated for DTM (direct-to-metal) application.

Great job Mike. I really like the engine mounts. I'll see if I can come up with something similiar.
