i finally hauled some decent weight
16 square of 30 year shingles= 4000lbs, drove about 20 miles. that was in the morning.
in the afternoon i hauled 6 square of 50 year shingles=2000 lbs that was a 85 mile trip, truck handled great both times very impressed with power and tow haul mode. best pick up truck that i have driven.

400watt inverter sounds pretty stout. How many amps can you draw on that inverter. I have been looking for a good one for my truck. Good pics by the way, sweet lookin' truck.

It's quite simple. 400W will draw 400W/12V = 33 1/3 A. Now, there's the innefficiency of the inverter to worry about. If the inverter is 90% efficient (normal), then you'll actually have 36-ish amps at 400W.

A rule of thumb is that an inverter will draw 10x the number of amps of 12V as it supplies at 120V.

The 12V sockets in large ford vehicles are generally fused at 30A. Check your fuse panel because sometimes those 30A fuses are shared among a few other small components. Most cars, however, only have 10A to 20A fuses on the power points ... and this is why inverters are only sold up to 400W for use with power points. In fact, 400W units often come with battery clips in addition to power point cords because many vehicles wont allow a 400W draw.

Inverters are getting very cheap. One early mod I'm going to do to my 'X when it arrives is to install a 3000 to 5000 watt inverter. There are several 3000 watt units selling for $1000 CAD. 3000 watts is 250A of 12V. Obviously, I'll be installing a beefier alternator, too.

Thanks for the info Zbeeble. That is very informative stuff. Just out of curiosity what are you gonna be running off of that 3000watt inverter. Seems like ya could have a refrigerator and a microwave in the truck with ya.

Well... firstly, it seems that most on this site would agree that you can never have enough power .

... But... there are a number of things one can run with 3000 watts. Since the majority of the US seems to be endowed with bad coffee, a coffee maker (900 watts) is at the top of my list. I have a 12V kettle right now, but it takes roughly 60 miles to boil.

I'm quite happy with my 12V cooler. It keeps water and protien cold for those long trips. It's getting easier to get good protien at a restaurant, but you can't beat grocery store prices.

But all of that would be fine with a 1000 watt inverter (several laptops, coffee maker, etc). My plan is to put AC outlets in each row and in the cargo area of the 'X for convenience.

But the 3000W or 5000W inverter makes the truck a nice stationary power source for backup of remote wireless pops. We have a number of generators around, but inevitably, I end up fetching one on the way to going to a POP without power... so the new plan is to have a twistlock plug in the back of the truck to provide power.

... Of course, this would also do nicely for jobsites as I plan to have air onboard, too.

wow that pretty much says it all

you are correct, my 400 watt does have battery clips as well as lighter plug, my f-350 has 20 amp fuses on both lighter socket and power point.
400w is plenty for me at this point.
