Stalling in HOT weather

Hi all.

I recently had a problem when towing my trailer on the weekend. It was an exceptionally hot day (for here - Canada) and we were traveling during the hottest part of the day.
We stopped for a few minutes to get a treat for our boys. After leaving, we got stuck in a 15 min. traffic lineup (road work). When we eventually got to the end of the lineup, I started to get up to the speed. The truck started loosing power fast, and in about 10 seconds, completely stopped dead. The engine died. I tried to start it - it seemed to WANT to catch, but couldn't. After popping the hood and waiting for 20 minutes, the engine caught, ran extremely rough for 10 seconds, then ran fine. (although it seemed with reduced power)
This happened 4 more times before we arrived at our destination.
- when I checked for gas at the FI rail, it sprayed out.
- the engine was running somewhat hotter, although a bit hotter than normal because of the hot day and trailer.

When we came back, we waited until the eve. when it was cooler and didn't run into the problem, although the truck seemed to be quite a bit weaker.

Recently had tuneup.

Any ideas? Something is obviously overheating.

? vapor lock? - has old fuel pump, needs newer one?
? loss of spark? - ICM needs replacing?
? coil needs replacing?

1989 Bronco, 351W (recently rebuilt), TFI-IV ignition

cheers

I recently had this problem with a 74 chevy pickup however it was not because of the hot weather. It was from debris in the fuel tank. If you drive at regular speeds the fuel is being slapped around and debris doesn't collect on the fuel screen. When you go real slow (in traffic) your screen may be collecting stuff. When it stalled you pulled over and the vacume on the screen stopped and the debris fell off. When you check to see if the fuel pressure is good the vehicle is stopped and the debris is on the bottom of the tank. You start it up and go for a while and sure enough the screen collects again. If you are sure the tank is clean and free of debris then the other tings you mentioned will have to be diagnosed. In my case I had to drop the tank, hose it out, let it dry well in the sun then re-install with no problems. Good luck.

Do you mean the Coolant Temperature Sender? That just sends a signal to the gauge, how could that have caused your problem?

thnx

I checked my trouble codes from the truck and get the following:

#34 - PFE/EPT sensor fault. High exhaust pressure sensor fault. I don't think the truck has one these - how am I getting the code?

#63 - TPS low voltage. I replaced this, but the code didn't go away.

thnx

I had the same issue on '89 xlt. I replaced the fuel pump relay and all was well.
