Ok heres my problem, does a 64 390 is internally balanced correct? So what is on the outside of the crank, I noticed my 66' 390 has what looks to be two pullys and thats it, and my 72 390 has the round soild looking balancer as does my 71' 360. My question is what kind of damper/balancer am i going to be able to run on this engine that will turn atleast 6500rpm. I saw the FE dampers in the Northern Auto Parts catalog , but will they work or no. this has been my biggest concern yet? Any ideas, thanks
i would get a balancer that is sfi approved, but a stock balancer will turn 6500 rpm's though. is the motor constantly going to see 6500 rpm's? if not i would stick with the stock one.
Well it probably will on the strip, especially on test n tune days. Whats got me on the stock on is the rubber is in it, buts it cracked I dont wanna waste it all b/c of this little peice here failed me.
well just found out that a new style balancer wont work on this engine, it has the pully/balancer made into one, being a 64' 390 the spacer that goes bnehind it wont let a normal balncer work so the guy at the shop said mine wasnt in bad shape like i thought and could run it, now lets hope it holds up. I might modify the spacer though, not sure right now...
Sorry to bring this old topic back up , but i think im wrong here and i wanna see if any experianced guys here know what im talking about. In my early style 390 block i have a 73 truck crank, which tell me if im wrong, would mean i could use an aftermarket pully and I dont have to deal with the old balancer/pully thing b/c with a later model crank my pullys should line up? So i should just need a new balancer right, surely i can bolt the desired pully onto the balancer for whatever need.
That old pulley you have is the damper. A new damper will fit it just fine. All 390 cranks were made from the same dimensions. You will need to get some pulleys that will bolt up to the newer style damper.
Well then , for an engine that will see atleast 6500rpm's what would ya'll run, heck i havent went cheap on anything else so far in this project, so cost isnt a worry, thats why i work a job......to support my engine habits , so set me straight here for a balancer Thanks
Well I dont know what it is about the Romac...But Scouders running one and so is Gtex, and I think Rat is also? there not cheap..But there supposed to be dam good?
I have seen them on ebay thru Maddog racing on sale for $219...
