Differential Advise

I have a 84 Bronco w/351W & 33in tires. The rear differential is a 3L50. I would like to lower the gear ratio, front & rear, for beter ecceleration. I am thinking about using 411 gears. Any Advise? I am planning to do it myself. Where is the best place to go for parts and instructions?

I've got 4.11 gearing on my 86 and I just put 33 x 1250 x 15's on this last weekend. It was kind of a slug before and now alittle more so. I don't think going up? in gears is the answer. Maybe go the other direction. My girlfriends 94 F150 5.0L has 3.5 gears (I think) and her truck just s**ts and gits. Of course her truck weighs considerably less than mine but it's hard to believe how much power hers seems to have. When her power band kicks in it will get your attention. 100% stock motor. 110K miles.

The 4.11 gears will give you more pick up from a start.

ChargerFan, you increasing your tire size is like going from a 3.5 gear to a 3.25 gear which will make it more sluggish off the line.

Ok

I stand corrected. Which is ok since I really didn't know in the first place, just throwing out an idea, but I don't want to give out bad info either. My bad.

Also if you have never installed gears you probably do not want to tackel this on your own. You need special tools to do it and have to know how to use them to measure backlash and such or you will end up messing the gears up if setup wrong.

Thanks

My Bronco is mostly off road. I am looking for more power in the dirt. I rebuilt the 351 w/ bored out 3 over, RV Cams, headers and 4 barrell carb. It is still a dog in the dirt. I have to drive it on the highway some so I dont want to go to low.

Has any body used 411 or lower gears in a big Bronco?

Do you have to completly disasemble the rear end to change Ring & Pinion?

Is there a book or something that tells you how to do it?

InkDawg, You are proably right, but I have a limited budget and I like doing it my self.

Well my truck is still in the shop getting the gear change. It has been in there a week and a day now. I originally put it in to have the rear end rebuilt but then I dedcided that I wanted some lower gears. To rebuild my rear end, replace an axle, put 4:10's in the front and rear is a little over $1300. It is kind of steep but I trust this shops work and I want it done right. It is supposed to be done today but I doubt it. I will let you know how I like the change when it is finished.

what rear diff do you have in your bronco? if its a 9" , just buy a new third member with the gears you want and it can be installed by you in your driveway. the front of course would need to be handled by a professional. you can take your front end apart and it is almost like a third member and can be taken in by itself to get setup. this would help cut some cost because the shop would only be dealing with the gear install and not all the labor in removing from front diff. 4.10's would be a good choice but if you every think you might go to say 35's then you might as well get 4.56's and just not drive so fast until you get the larger tires.

good luck

Thanks Kemicalburns

It is a 9 inch. I think I may go to the 456.
I guess I will talk to a mechanic about doing what you said.

the 351 88' i bought with 35 in tires and i think it has the standard 9" rear end
would it cause excess damage to just use it till it wears out or should i regear it now to avoid tearing something else up

well a 9inch wasnt standard in that year. they stopped puting the 9 in around 84-85. then they went to the 8.8 rear end. how you can tell is the rear cover can be removed on an 8.8 vs the 9 doesnt have a diff cover.
the 35's are killen ya im sure. going to 4.56 woud put you right about stock ratios again. you can regear one diff at a time but only if you remove the front driveline till both ends are done otherwise you will find your tcase on the ground in a hurry.
