acetone emblems

I'm planning on acetoning my emblems this weekend and I have a question. I have read many threads on the subject but no one has addressed the red Lariat portion of the emblem. Do I need to tape over the red or just be very careful around it? Thanks for the help.

Bigrich51- what year is your truck?

99xlt- It should work. On the 97-98 F150, the paint is baked on and will not come off with acetone. on the 99 and up, you just spray and wipe. make sure you don't get any on your fenders though.

Ok, thanx. I went to the dollar store and bought a bottle of finger nail polish remover (100% Acetone). And i did the scratch test to see if there was chrome under there. Ill try to do it tommorow. It wont turn out as nice as the F-series since there is less black to begin with, but i think it will be a nice touch.

The red Lariat part of the emblem held up very well to accitone. I bought new emblems, accitoned them (add i soaked them with accitone) and then stuck them on. (pictures in gallery)

They make emblem glue. I saw it at walart, but im sure auto stores have it.

I did one of my emblems and it was a flop. I started doing it on the truck, but wasn't getting the results i wanted so i removed it. Then dipped it in the acetone. It came off in places, but some places, no matter how hard i scrubbed, wouldnt come off. It doesnt look too bad so ill put it back on. Im not doing the other side though. Since you can only see one side at a time, noone will notice. And you really couldn't tell i did anything to the one i took off.

Oh well, it was a good idea, and glad it worked for the rest of you.

I ended up taping off all of the emblems. I think they turned out good. the only place that I could not get all of the paint off was inside of the "r" in superduty. other than that they turned out.

Well the paint on my emblems is baked on, so now I have a question. If I go to the Ford dealership here and buy new emblems, will the black paint on them come off or will it also be baked on? Also, if I went that route, would the new Ranger emblems fit the holes the same way as my old ones did?

Felixdacat76- new emblems from the dealership will have removable paint. if the pins don't line up just snip them off and get a measuring tape to line it up right.

Diabolic- 'acetoning' is just using acetone to remove the black paint on fender emblems to make them all chrome.

Well, I had the Ford dealership order me a pair of Ranger emblems, and when they came in the guy at the counter and I both looked em over and decided that paint was probably baked on as well. What to do, what to do?
