remove/replace alternator
Unplug the electrical connector from the alternator
Remove the drive belt
On 4.6l, remove the ignition wire assembly from the intake manifold area
Remove the bolts and seperate the alternator from the engine
Installation is the reverse of removal.
The main thing is to remove voltage from the system (that's why the battery is disconnected) and the rest is removing nuts and bolts.
Autozone will rent you a free tool to do this (you get your deposit back).
It was crucial and worth it. Then when your all done, you get to thread
the belt back around all the pulleys. Have fun!
It's not bad, get a Haynes or Chilton and print articles from here,
you'll zip through it. Reset your computer when your done.
For anyone that wants to know.....it's a pain in the as! to do this job until you know EXACTLY what tool works to release the tension on the belt. I bought one but it did not work (I'm taking it back today).....instead I used my own 16" 1/2" drive rachet and released the tension from the top of the fan area. I removed the alternator and replaced the brushes $12 (a new ford alternator $230) and replaced the unit. That was the easy part.
I added a new belt while I was at it.
Like I say, it's not that bad once you use the correct tool and know where to place it.
