There really are no VIN numbers on the engine itself. You can check the casting codes and verify that they are close tot he production dates of your vehicle. The VIN is located on the driver side door. The casting codes are usually found on a pad by the starter or the oil filter adapter. what vehicle are you working with and what motor is supposed to be in it? Some of the engine components have casting numbers to help along, like the heads and manifold and such....
I would jot down the VIN number off the driver door and then check in with the "inline six" forum boys. I believe your choices on that motor are a 240 or 300 CID version. They will be able to tell you how to locate date casting codes.

Depending on how old it is, the door may have been changed -- the authenticating VIN is stamped into the right frame rail in the engine compartment -- get the right angle and a good flashlight (maybe some degreaser ) and you should be able to read it.
they only put the 240 in 73-4, so its most likely a 300-6.
In reality, your vin is pretty useless, because things change so much from accidents, resto-mods, conversions. Often times its near impossible to tell if any mods have been done.
The truck in my gallery, its a 79, underneath the 77 body, and 75 chassis with 79 brakes and power steering. It looks like a perfect 77.
