anyone ever have to have the "backlash adjustment" done to their differential?
mine is making a clunk when i let off then re apply throttle- service manager says Ford has been setting the diffs looser as of late- possibly for better fuel mileage. says they can take care of it with the backlash adjustment procedure.
i like good gas mileage as much as anyone but how loose does it have ot be?
just wondering how many others have the same issue
I have a similar problem I purchased 11/15/03 2004 F250 SC Lariat fx4 6.0l auto. The problem is when shifting from 2nd to 3rd I hear what sounds like a clunking noise similar to a backlash or trans issue. When cruising around 40mph, i can duplicate but most servere when on and off the accelerator. Another issue is the whining while in 4 wheel drive. I have had it in 2 times already with NO PROBLEM FOUND. The noise appears to be getting worse. Also I have a shutter during acceleration when pulling my trailer?? Is this something you see also?
no mine pulls smooth towing and shifts smooth ( no clunks between gears ) around town- the only time i get the clunk is like when the driveline is taking up the slack to initially move the vehicle and on/off/on throttle - enough noise to make me go looking for the cause.
i always associate gear whine with a lack of lubrication or improper meshing of the gear teeth.how many miles have you driven in AWD ? could this be a "breaking in" period for the front diff?
i believe i could handle a gear whine better than a clunk :-)
